Rasik Arts’ first Roundtable of the season

Rasik Arts

Rasik Arts is back at the 5th Elementt restaurant in Toronto for our first Roundtable of the season on September 18.

We will be reading “Cyrano”, a South Asian version of the classic Cyrano de Bergerac that was produced by the Royal National Theatre and Tara Arts in the UK in 1995. In this re-telling of the story, Cyrano (played in 1995 by Naseeruddin Shah) is the prompter and writer for Durgesh Prasad’s theatre company whose ambitions to be a leading man are thwarted by his large nose. Kishan, a new actor, joins the company and falls in love with the leading actress, the beautiful Rukshaan, whom Cyrano helps him woo.

We meet at 7pm in the back room of the 5th Elementt. All are welcome to join us. There is no admission charge. You may choose to read along silently, or take a part. “Cyrano” is as poetic and witty as the original, with lots of roles to cover.

Tuesday, Sept 18
7-10pm
5th Elementt, 1033 Bay St. (south of Bloor)

Call for Submissions: rock.paper.sistahz festival 7

The rock.paper.sistahz festival turns 7 this season, with much to celebrate! Our annual festival has been empowering and celebrating emerging and established artists, by providing opportunities to develop and present new works.

The festival has presented creators, works, and ideas from across Canada, the Caribbean, England, and the United States. In addition to attracting submissions from a broad cross section of artists, we’ve engaged a plethora of actors, designers, directors, musicians, visual artists, and apprentices who are enthusiastic about participating in this hand-picked and fully curated teaming of quality, diversity, and raw energy.

With a “cool range of artists on each evening”

rock.paper.sistahz festival has been pushing the envelope by developing and presenting fresh materials, performance styles, and ideas. And we continue to unapologetically push past expected boundaries with our goals:

  • to encourage new growth
  • to promote the voices of emerging and established artists alike
  • to provide opportunities for black women artists to have their work nurtured
  • to encourage interaction among black women artists
  • and to heighten the life-affirming effects of the collision of art and culture and everyday life

Described as “… a high energy blast for everyone… & a huge hit in any corner of Canada” (The Montreal Gazette) the festival is here to stay!

Participation in rock.paper.sistahz festival is open to both emerging and established artists, and works beyond the theatre stage – literary readings, dance, music, film/video screenings, art installations, storytelling, standup – are included; so artists in any and all disciplines are encouraged to submit proposals.

As artists/creators, you come with the words, ideas, and material; and a readiness to engage new and familiar audiences.

b current will provide development/production or presentation resources as fully as can be afforded to works selected for inclusion in the festival. As well as scaled fees or participation honoraria, resources include:

  • presentation venue for all selected work
  • technical & creative support + workshop time, dramaturgy and creative teams for plays
  • and promotion through the festival outlets

Out-of-town participants will also have travel expenses and per diems covered.

  • full contact information including email address & fax# as available
  • a hard copy of typed script or synopsis & description of the project/idea you would like to explore, or copy of film/video, or any other appropriate and accessible format samples
  • a self-addressed stamped envelope for return of material(s) if you require such
