Event: Arts & Crafts Fair and Sale, Canadian Opera Company

The Canadian Opera Company presents a weekend extravaganza of artistic endeavour with the Arts & Crafts Fair and Sale from Friday, November 30 to Sunday, December 2 in the Toby and Joey Tanenbaum Opera Centre, 227 Front St . E.  This collection of art, created by COC staff, features submissions from visual artists, sculptors, cartoonists, multimedia artists, jewellers, knitters, and crafters of all sorts.  The weekend kicks off with an Opening Reception on Thursday, November 29 from 5 to 7 p.m. and continues Friday through Sunday.

Workshop: MASK INTESIVE WORKSHOP, Shakespeare In Action

MASK INTESIVE WORKSHOP

Shakespeare In Action is facilitating an exciting ten day mask intensive
workshop conducted by Internationally renowned actor, playwright, director
and teacher, Joan Schirle. Joan Schirle is the founding artistic director of
Dell’Arte International and the director of the Dell’Arte International
School of Physical Theatre. She is a senior teacher of the Alexander
Technique; her teaching work includes movement, mask performance, commedia
dell’arte and physical acting. She has devoted her research to the work of

Announcement: Free Drawer Boy Tickets, Theatre Passe Muraille

Now held over to December 2 when it will finally close, Theatre Passe Muraille (TPM) is thanking Torontonians for helping make The Drawer Boy a hit  with an absolutely FREE Thank You Toronto! performance on November 27 at 8pm.

Torontonians have fallen in love with the two bachelor farmers, Angus and Morgan (played by Randy Hughson and John Jarvis) and city-boy Miles (Frank Cox-O’Connell). So, as a special ‘THANK YOU TORONTO!’, TPM is offering Tuesday, November 27 as an absolutely free-of-charge performance on a first-come, first-served basis.

Tickets for the November 27 show will be available ON THE DAY OF SHOW ONLY STARTING AT 6PM for in-person pickup at the TPM Box Office at 16 Ryerson Avenue. Limit 2 per person. No reservations, pre-paid tickets or phone/internet orders.

Job Posting: Administrative Assistant Programming and Marketing Departments, Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre

This dynamic individual has strong organizational skills, is self-motivated and works quickly, with minimal supervision. A background in arts administration,  non-profit administration or marketing/publicity  is required. Experience in event coordination an asset. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English are  essential, and a customer service orientation, combined with creative problem-solving skills, will help you thrive in this team-oriented environment. Proficiency in MS Word and Excel required; ability to use PowerPoint and Publisher software an asset. The ideal candidate should have the ability to work independently or with colleagues and volunteers.  Ability to learn additional computer software quickly a requirement.

Salary: $12/hour; 40-hour week. Flexibility in hours an asset.

This person would provide administrative support to the Departments of Marketing and Programming–Cultural Arts and Jewish Life, Children’s Programs –  in the following areas:

  1. Coordination of mailings, distribution and posting of flyers, brochures, special offers and updates
  2. Jewish holiday event planning, coordination and delivery
  3. Data entry of e-mails gathered at events, and enhancement and management of those e-lists;
  4. Data entry and coordination of class and program rosters;
  5. Verification of event information in our database program– regarding room bookings, course times, prices
  6. Data gathering and proofreading for annual program guide;
  7. Maintaining presence and posting of publicity flyers throughout the building, as well as targeted locations off-site, and at special events, on and off-site;
  8. Design and posting of basic flyers and signage, to support all programs and initiatives
  9. Maintenance and upkeep of basic program supplies
  10. Course-related administration, including teacher payroll, refunds, rosters
  11. Follow-up phone calls for fundraising, marketing and program initiatives.

Announcement: Strategic Initiative Applications, Metcalf Foundation

In order to respond better to the planning cycles of arts organizations, the Metcalf Foundation will be considering Strategic Initiative applications in winter and summer of 2008.  That means that there will be a new deadline for intake of Letters of Interest to the Strategic Initiative program – December 17, 2007.

Successful applicants to the Strategic Initiative program will be funded by the Foundation for a three-year period to implement a strategic course of action that would not be possible under normal budgetary circumstances. The program is open to professional theatre, dance, music, and opera organizations, based in Toronto, with annual operating budgets under $3 million.  Prospective applicants are encouraged to contact Michael Jones, Arts Program Director, to discuss their proposals in advance.

Full application guidelines, including requirements for the Letter of Interest to the Strategic Initative program, are available for download at the Foundation’s website, http://www.metcalffoundation.com.

Job Posting: Executive Director, Fringe of Toronto Theatre Festival

The Fringe of Toronto Theatre Festival, a non-profit/charitable organization that produces two annual festivals featuring over 150 independent theatre companies, is currently seeking an Executive Director.

As Executive Director, you will provide dynamic leadership for all the company’s activities and follow the mandate of the organization including the guiding principles of the Canadian Association of Fringe Festivals.   Working with the Producer, the Executive Director is responsible for the fiscal management, revenue generation, human resources management, leadership and over-all health of the organization.

The Fringe is entering its 20th anniversary season and has just completed a record setting year with a ticketed attendance of 57,128 and returned $399,320 in box office revenue to the artists.  The Festival currently has three full time staff, 70-80 contracted staff, 325 volunteers and an operating budget of $650,000.

We are looking for someone who is creative, responsible, self-motivated, organized and outgoing.  The ability to multi-task efficiently and work within a team structure is also an important part of the position and festival environment.

The key duties for this position will require a broad knowledge of arts/festival management, grant writing, fundraising, bookkeeping, marketing and human resources. The Fringe is currently in the early planning stages of launching a capital campaign and although experience in this field is not required it will be considered an asset.

Skill Requirements:

  • 3 to 5 years experience in a similar role.
  • Superior administrative and management skills including team building and problem solving skills.
  • Proven fundraising and grant writing experience and understanding of the current arts funding climate.
  • Knowledge of the Fringe Festival movement and philosophy of the Fringe.
  • Financial planning and budgeting experience.
  • Negotiation, facilitation and community development skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast paced, high pressure environment.
  • Strong computer skills.

This is a full time permanent position within the organization.  The successful applicant will have a six month probation period and performance review during which time there will be opportunity for a transition period and on-the-job training/experience with the current Interim Executive Director/Festival Producer.
