Situated on Toronto’s waterfront, Harbourfront Centre is renowned as Canada’s foremost facility for contemporary culture. Our year-round operation offers some 4000 internationally acclaimed events ranging from music, literary and theatrical festivals to children’s activities and craft shops.
Harbourfront Centre is currently looking for Artist Educators in our School Visits – Community and Educational Programmes department to work in residence with school children to create large sculptural pieces. The sculptures will be used in the Fire Walk at Luminat’eau: the Luminato Festival of Arts & Creativity closing weekend celebrations at Harbourfront Centre.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Responsible for teaching visual arts workshops to Grades 4, 5, and 6 students in schools located in the 13 priority neighbourhoods as defined by the City of Toronto.
- Trains in art-making with contracted artist and ensures a thorough understanding of various sculpture building techniques.
- Teach art project assigned to Grades 4, 5, and 6 students, motivating students and encouraging their personal creativity and imagination.
- Works with coordinator to ensure residency period runs smoothly and that project is completed to the highest standards.
REQUIREMENTS:
The ideal candidate will have previous teaching and/or work experience with children in this age group. He/She will have knowledge, education and/or experience in teaching visual arts. The applicant will also have skills that are normally acquired through a post-secondary degree in visual arts or equivalent training and experience in visual arts. He/She must have a willingness to learn grade/age appropriate teaching strategies. He/She will be energetic, creative, and imaginative with strong organizational and interpersonal skills. The ability to be flexible and adapt to unexpected situations is required.
The job requires attendance at four full days of training (end of March) and the entire length of the artist-in-residence program in the schools (days and times will be decided by the coordinator and manager). Some weekend work may be required. There may also be opportunities to work with the community at large if interested.
DURATION: March 22, 2008 – June 14, 2008
8:30am – 4:30 pm, 4 full days of training (end of March) and artist-in-residence in schools (Approximately one week in April or May 2008)
RATE OF PAY: Honorarium of $150 per day (approximately 9 – 15 days)
