World Theatre Day was created in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI). It is celebrated annually on March 27th by ITI Centres and the international theatre community. Various national and international theatre events are organized to mark this occasion. One of the most important of these is the circulation of the World Theatre Day International Message through which, at the invitation of ITI, a figure of world stature shares his or her reflections on the theme of Theatre and a Culture of Peace.

Job Posting: Assistant to the Production Manager, Tarragon Theatre

Tarragon Theatre is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced individual to fulfill a new support position as Assistant to the Production Manager for the 2008-09 season. The position is for 38 weeks, with some flexibility in start date. Tarragon’s first show of the 2008-09 season begins previews on September 2, 2008. The Assistant to the Production Manager will provide direct support to the Production Manager and Technical Director, through a full season of five Mainspace shows, two Extra Space shows, and three Remount shows. This is a fantastic learning opportunity, and a chance to work in carpentry, props, lighting and sound, as well as the management, scheduling and budgeting side of production. There is an opportunity for the APM to take on some tour management duties towards the end of the season.

LORRAINE KIMSA THEATRE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE, (formerly Young Peoples Theatre) is the largest Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) company in Canada. In addition to being a producer and presenter of theatre, LKTYP is also the home of a year-round Drama School for youth. At the center of LKTYP’s artistic policy is a desire for children to be imprinted with experiences that will increase their access to the world and to their own developing identities. We create theatre to have a positive and lasting impact on the emotional, social, and intellectual development of young people. At LKTYP we believe that the more challenging, the more hostile, the more isolated within-the-crowd our world becomes, the more we need art to help us interpret the universe, connect with each other, and imagine a better future. If adults need this, kids need it more.LKTYP is currently seeking an outstanding candidate for the full-time position of Drama School Coordinator. Reporting directly to the Director of Education & Participation, the Drama School Coordinator is the principal manager and leader of our regular theatre arts education classes which introduces kids and youth to theatre and facilitates the development and practice of positive social skills.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
To manage, lead and implement the 39-year old Drama School and its ancillary activities including:

• Planning, implementing and assessing all Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer Drama School programming at Downtown, North York and Etobicoke sites, in collaboration with the Director of Education & Participation.
• Coordinating an innovative arts education curriculum with vision, integrity and expertise.
• Marketing the Drama School in tandem with the Directors of Marketing and of Education & Participation, while acting as its principal public face.
• Scheduling, contracting, training, supervising and acting as a resource to the Drama School Staff.
• Providing leadership and management to the Drama School’s efforts to reduce barriers to the accessibility of LKTYP’s programmes and activities through its extensive scholarship opportunities.
• Working to ensure appropriate access and accommodation to students with a variety of physical, psychological, linguistic and social capacities.
• Managing the Drama School Budget in tandem with the Director of Education & Participation.
• Supervising and developing the Drama School curriculum in collaboration with the Director of Education, the Educational Services Coordinator and LKTYP Arts Education Facilitators and Teachers.
• Managing the maintenance and expansion of LKTYP’s Skill Development Workshops.
• Collaborating with, and supporting, other Education & Participation activities as directed by the Director of Education & Participation.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

• 5 years professional experience in diverse, community-based arts-education with an emphasis on theatre school or arts education administration.
• 5 years proven ability to create and execute meaningful arts-education programming emphasizing theatre as a facilitator and manager.
• Substantial experience serving the needs of, and working with, children, youth and the people who care for them.
• Ability to work with volunteers who have varying levels of experience and goals.
• Experience with resource, project and budget management.
• Computer literacy: MS Excel, Word, database management.

Reporting directly to the Managing Director this position has the two-fold responsibility of: office coordination for The Factory Theatre, and personal assistance to the Managing Director (and Artistic Director). The primary area of responsible for this position is to create a professional and welcoming office environment for the staff, vendors and creative team for The Factory Theatre. The successful candidate will work in a fast-paced and artistically driven environment, working equally with administrative and artistic staff and leaders. Candidates must have some familiarity with Canadian theatre and previous administrative experience.

This entry level position is suitable for an emerging professional passionate about theatre and interested in learning more about producing and facilitating live performance.

Specifically, this position has the following responsibilities:

Administrative Assistance

• Responsible for daily mail sorting (including invoices), reception duties, media clippings and office appearance (cleaning)
• Assistance with marketing, fundraising, box office and outreach mailings
• Responsible for coordinating and compiling all outgoing mail and postage allocations,
• General office coordination including ensuring the ordering and the maintenance of stock of office supplies and letterhead.
• Preparation and coordination of all Equity contracts and remittances
• Personal administrative assistance to the Managing Director and Artistic Director, including assistance with monthly Board meetings
• Ensuring that general phone and e-mail enquiries are forwarded or answered appropriately.
• Organizing and leading all weekly staff meetings
• Participation as a full team member of the Factory Theatre staff and the assumption of responsibility for special projects (i.e. special events) and committee work as required.

Office Coordination

• Responsible for trouble-shooting the following systems:
• Telephones, voicemail, greetings and fax machine (as needed)
• Personal computers, passwords, e-mail, backup  and general networking and Internet as needed – assistance available from EXCEL consultants
• Photocopy machine

Data Entry

• Working with the Marketing and Development Manager to input tax receipt data and other stewardship items
• Preparing, assembling, collating and distributing all weekly payables
• Preparing equity/artist contracts and tracking payment schedules
• Coordinating facility rental inquiries, bookings and tracking revenue

The responsibilities listed above address the key duties of the position. The Managing Director will occasionally request additional responsibilities. They will not however, be unreasonably assigned.

In 2008 Magnetic North is partnering with the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT) gathering over 350 delegates together in one place for four days. By bringing Magnetic North and PACT together, this year’s Industry Series promises access to the full breadth of the Canadian theatre community.

Artist Pitches

This June, for the first time, Magnetic North will be holding TWO pitch sessions during the Industry Series. The first will be geared towards Producing Artists and the second will give the stage to Presenters. For artists, the pitch session is an ideal opportunity to kick-start their projects or extend touring opportunities by presenting their work to a wide audience of producers, artistic directors, festival curators, presenters and other cultural industry representatives.
Please note: Presenter Pitches will be held on Thursday June 12 from 1pm-3pm at the Granville Island Stage.

Pitch Selection Criteria

• Applicants for the Artist Pitch Session must be professional artists. It is preferable that the “pitchers” be artistically involved in the project.
• Projects should have financial and producing strategies in place at the time of application.
• The presentation is ten (10) minutes in length and may include audio/visual support. We suggest that some time be reserved for questions. A technical rehearsal will take place on the morning of the pitch session.

Submission Details:

• Complete the enclosed application form.
• Provide brief biographies of the artists (100 words max) and organizations (150 words max) involved.
• Provide a summary of the project (150 words max) and relevant logistical details.
• Provide a list of your audio-visual materials and technical requirements for your pitch (dvd, adaptors, etc).
• Enclose a non-refundable processing fee of $50 (cheque or money order written to the order of Magnetic North Theatre Festival).
• Successful applicants will be responsible for securing their own travel and accommodation.

We are looking for a range of presenters from festivals both large and small, to multi-disciplinary programmers, regional theatres, and individuals creating new presentation opportunities in their communities.
