Internship: Props Intern, The Canadian Stage Company

Nationally and internationally acclaimed, The Canadian Stage Company is Canada’s leading not-for-profit contemporary theatre company. Based in Toronto, The Canadian Stage Company develops and produces the best in Canadian and international contemporary theatre.

Reporting to the Head of Props, this Intern position offers an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge in props and props management.

Responsibilities include:

  • Organizing props / materials, boxes and shelves
  • Handling props from various productions, including hand props and materials
  • Assisting as needed in various props projects

Start Date: August 5, 2009 – End Date: December 4, 2009 (negotiable)

Hours: Two days per week, (negotiable). Full week from August 11th -  August 15th, 2009 Schedule can be flexible but work must be done during weekday office hours.

Minimum requirements:

  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Keen interest in learning about props
  • Ability to work well individually and as part of a team
  • Self-starter. Full training will be provided but in some cases the successful candidate will be asked to work independently on assigned projects.
  • Being enrolled in a course of study that involves interning at an arts organization is considered an asset but not required.

Interns are eligible to attend plays and play readings, workshops, discount tickets to other theatres, and you will be part of a dynamic office environment. Job Posting: Managing Director, Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People

Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People (LKTYP) invites applications for the position of Managing Director.

LKTYP is Canada’s largest theatre for young audiences and currently produces and presents an 8-play season with an audience of 80,000+. Housed at a renovated, historical venue in Toronto, LKTYP works on a 468-seat Mainstage and an 115-seat Studio stage. Its operating budget is approximately $3.5 million. LKTYP’s artistic policy focusses on arts and education – in fact, learning is at the center of everything we do.

With Artistic Director Allen MacInnis, the Managing Director is one half of a two-person team working to achieve the artistic and educational objectives of the theatre, while ensuring LKTYP remains in a sound financial position. The Managing Director reports directly to the Board.

Specific accountabilities include:

  • Working with the Artistic Director and Board of Directors to develop policy and strategic planning objectives
  • Development of financial and budgeting strategies to maintain a sound financial base to support the theatre now and in the long term
  • Management of a 33-person staff
  • Working with Development and Marketing Department Directors to encourage innovation, efficiency, and success
  • General management of the company and overseeing of its day-to-day operations
  • Preparation of funding applications and presentations, and acting as principal liaison with governments, agencies and other external organizations
  • Working with Board, volunteers, and project management to realize LKTYP’s long term building expansion plans.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Proven leadership ability
  • At least seven years experience in senior management in a mid to large-sized not-for-profit arts organization
  • Ability to translate artistic needs and values into institutional strategies and specific operating plans
  • Experience in working with and engaging a Board of Directors
  • A successful track record in strong fiscal management, marketing and development.
  • Past experience in a capital campaign would be a definite asset.

Level I – Artist-Educator

A three-level certification program for artists wishing to expand their careers.
The Artist Educator Professional Training is for artists who would like to learn more about arts education or who are already engaged in arts education. This course prepares artists to work in schools and or in community settings and blends educational content and theory with a creative “laboratory” environment. Artists can experiment with applying their arts practice in education. Modules will be presented on subjects such as how people learn at different stages of life, understanding the brain, adult education, and how to develop and structure arts-based lessons that are effective and engaging for learners. Course modules include:

Instructor: Sheena D. Robertson – plus additional program specialists
Sheena Robertson has a B.A. in drama from the University of Toronto. She also has a teaching degree, a Masters in Education, and teaches drama for teachers through OISE/UofT and York University. She is in much demand as a workshop facilitator – working at the school board, university and community levels, as well as through institutions such as The Royal Conservatory and Equity Showcase Theatre. She was a teacher in Regent Park for many years, and has been involved as a consultant with Pathways to Education since its inception. She is a specialist in the use of the arts to teach literacy skills, and explore issues of social justice – and since leaving classroom teaching, has focused much of her art making on giving ‘voice’ to the stories of the inner city. Through her company Whimsical Productions, she has recently directed a series of experimental ‘shorts’ focusing on the concept of ‘self’ – including a recent project with a group of Muslim girls, a documentary about Pathways to Education, and has co-directed, translated and produced a new theatrical play entitled Lizardboy (with Victor Gomez). She had a recent photographic exhibit at Metro Hall. Sheena also produced MacBeth’s Kitchen – one of the Toronto Fringe Festival’s “Best of the Fringe”. She has a number of other exciting theatre and photography projects in development – including a short film, and a children’s play.

Level II – Lead Artist

A three-level certification program for artists wishing to expand their careers.
This 14 week course prepares artists to work in schools and community settings, leading to the designation of “Lead Artist”. The course offers Level II modules of the three-level certification course. The Lead Artist certification course blends a sequential approach to core educational content and theory with a creative “laboratory” environment in which artists can experiment with applying their art forms to the delivery of learning outcomes. The course will focus on:

  • How people learn at different stages of life
  • Adult education
  • Understanding the brain
  • How to develop and structure arts-based lessons that are effective and engaging for learners ~ including adult learners.

Angela Elster, Vice President Academic, The Royal Conservatory, is the founder and Executive Director of Learning Through the Arts. A musician and educator by training, Angela has held positions in higher education, elementary education, and senior administration. She started her career in music studying voice at the University of Toronto and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education before undertaking graduate work at The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto, receiving her Masters Degree in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning in 1998. Most recently Ms. Elster graduated with a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies, Research, Leadership and Training in Expressive Arts: Therapy, Education and Consulting at the European Graduate School, where she is currently completing her PhD. Her research interests include teacher change and how the arts inspire resilience.

Event: 4th annual KULTURA Filipino Arts Festival, Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts & Culture

Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts & Culture is having its 4th annual KULTURA Filipino Arts Festival, a day-long event, starting at 12-noon, at Bellevue Square Park (Corner of Augusta and Denison St.), and at the KAPISANAN (167 Augusta Avenue), adjacent to the park, in the heart of Kensington Market.

This year, we have a curated theme for KULTURA: Balikbayan Renaissance — is an artistic movement inspired by this generation’s collective rediscovery of their Philippine homeland. It begins when the Canadian-born children of Philippine immigrants first touchdown on the soil of the islands – the overwhelming sense of belonging, an awakening to the true meaning of Home. The visual arts exhibition is a distillation of this transformative Balikbayan experience.

Organized by Kapisanan Philippine Centre in community partnership with Carlos Bulosan Theatre, KULTURA Festival will feature live music, spoken word poetry, and children face painting, a visual arts exhibit in the KAPISANAN gallery, and an arts & crafts market selling goods made by Filipino-Canadian artists, all in the park. And after 6pm, there will be theatre readings, a short-film in the performance space at 167 Augusta Ave.

The Ontario Arts Council is a publicly funded arm’s-length agency of Ontario’s Ministry of Culture whose primary purpose is to award grants to professional artists and arts organizations.

The Program Assistant positions provide key administrative support to the Ontario Arts Council’s granting processes by being responsible for data entry, sorting and filing, mass mailings and correspondence, cheque requisitioning, making hotel, travel and meal arrangements for meetings, answering general inquiries by phone or e-mail, uploading information to the web, and taking notes and running audio-visual equipment during the panels, all of which needs to be completed within tight deadlines.

The ideal candidates have two to three years relevant administrative experience, thrive in a fast-paced environment, look for ways to improve on efficiency through multi-tasking, have a keen eye for detail and find this work satisfying.  This combined with the ability to communicate in a professional demeanor and work well independently as well as with others is essential.  Proficiency with Word and Excel and in verbal and written French at the advanced level is a requirement.  Knowledge and experience in the arts a plus
