Event: TEDxTO, TED

The TEDxTO Committee has been hard at work preparing for Toronto’s first TEDx event! TEDxTO will take place at Theatre Passe Muraille on September 10, 2009. Details about how to apply to attend the event will be posted online but first things first! We’re putting together a packed line-up of speakers to explore and inspire the world’s future and need input from YOU, the community. We’re looking for the new and as-of-yet undiscovered ideas, projects, and people that will shape the future of our city, and ultimately the world!

Civic engagement and participation is the fabric of a great society. As we approach the end of this century’s first decade and embark on a new one, we want to ask “What’s Next”?  We’ve left several slots open for community nomination. Think you or someone you know have “Ideas Worth Spreading” on stage at TEDxTO? Apply or nominate someone today at www.tedxto.com.

Note: Applications close on July 17th. Speakers will be selected by the TEDxTO organizing committee.

What’s TED?

TED is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. We could try to explain in more detail but why not check out some inspiring talks by past speakers like Bill Clinton, BIll Gates, Tony Robbins, Seth Godin and many more at www.ted.com

What’s TEDx?

It’s a new way for local communities to create and host their own unofficial TED-style events! In the spirit of “Ideas Worth Spreading,”  We’re supporting approved organizers by offering a free toolset that includes detailed advice, the right to use recorded TEDTalks, promotion on our site, connection to other organizers, and a little piece of our brand in the form of the TEDx label. You can find out more at www.ted.com/tedx

Call for Submissions: CBT Play Creation Unit Deadline Extended, Carlos Bulosan Theatre

The CBT Play Creation Unit is a novice play creation program.  It introduces participants to various approaches to making theatre.  Through regular workshops and sessions with professional theatre artists, we help participants identify, cultivate and explore their creative voice.  Each member will create a 10-15 minute piece of theatre that will be presented in CBT’s annual showcase of new work Tales from the Flipside at the end of February 2010.

Submission Guidelines:

  • A letter of interest outlining why you would like to be part of the program, including an idea you would like to develop into a piece of theatre
  • A 1-2 page submission of creative writing (this can take the form of dialogue, poetry, prose, short story, etc.)
  • The Play Creation Unit begins meeting September 2009 through to January 2010.

The deadline for submissions is July 31, 2009.

Submissions can be sent by email to: info@carlosbulosan.com

Workshop: The Volcano Conservatory 2009, Volcano

The Volcano Conservatory is just over a month away (aug 22 to 30).  There are some new techniques with traditional theatre or dance training, and some great guest teachers.  Some of the new classes include:

RED NOSE CLOWN with Emmanuelle Delpech-Ramey
- amazing French guest teacher – a true master

SKINNER RELEASE TECHNIQUE with Julia Sasso
- astonishing physical technique invented in the USA – not technique-oriented so much as surrender-oriented – so anyone can learn it.

GEORGIAN FOLK SINGING with Alan Gasser
- alan is one of the best in the continent. i bundle his teaching of this amazing folk rep (wild harmonies!) with extended vocal work taught by Katherine Duncanson. open your voice, train your ears. i also am offering a similar bundle looking at West African rep and rhythm. i believe vocal/song training to open up more than one’s voice, as a performer…

PHYSICAL SCENE STUDY with Leah Cherniak
- leah is designing a course for us combining lecoq and traditional classical scene study. and she’s one of the best we have.

there’s more of course – Suzuki from Japan, Viewpoints from the USA, Chekhov Technique from Russia (maybe my all-time favourite acting technique).
