Internship: Artistic Programs, Canadian Stage Company

Dates: January 18th – May 24th 2010

The Canadian Stage Company is now accepting applications for the (volunteer) position ARTISTIC PROGRAMS VOLUNTEER INTERN.

Reporting to the Artistic Coordinator, this Intern position offers an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge in running creation and professional development programs that engage established theatre artists, emerging voices and youth, as well as the overall artistic activities of a large theatre organization, including casting and season programming.

About The Canadian Stage Company:
Based in Toronto, The Canadian Stage Company develops and produces the best in Canadian and international contemporary theatre and is Canada’s largest contemporary theatre company.
Major Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with the research and organization of projects for current and upcoming seasons, as well as maintaining departmental resources
  • Assisting in the organization of submissions and casting activities
  • Assisting with the co-ordination for programs for professional artists including creation programs, the BASH! Artist Development Program and other new initiatives
  • Assisting with the co-ordination for programs for emerging artists and theatre students such as The Gymnasium Emerging Artist Development Program
  • Assisting with the co-ordination for programs for youth and opportunities for young artists
  • Assisting with the co-ordination for The Festival of Ideas and Creation
  • Documenting artistic activities and reporting on findings, compiling feedback and contributing to overall program evaluation

The Intern will have opportunities to opportunities to participate in artistic program planning and visioning sessions, and where appropriate, opportunities to develop leadership skills in the implementation of new initiatives.

The Canadian Stage Company Artistic Programs Intern must commit to 18 – 25 hrs per week. Schedule can be flexible.

Ideal Personal Qualities:

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Interest in theatre creation and producing, artistic development and casting
  • Experience in leadership roles and desire to improve leadership skills
  • Passion for the performing arts and a working knowledge of Toronto’s professional theatre scene
  • Ability to work well individually and as part of a team
  • Previous office administration experience and previous creation experience are an asset
  • Highly organized Self-starter. Full training will be provided but in some cases the successful candidate will be asked to work independently on assigned projects.
  • High computer proficiency (MS Word & Excel experience preferred, e-mail and internet)
  • Being enrolled in a course of study that involves interning at an arts organization is considered an asset but not required.

In addition to the many benefits of The Canadian Stage Company’s Intern Program which include information sessions with staff members of their choice, the successful candidate will also be in contact with some of Canada’s leading theatre artists and will have opportunity to take part in festival events. The intern will also receive free tickets to Canadian Stage productions and will be invited to readings, workshops and other artistic development initiatives. Audition: THE QUEENS by Normand Chaurette, translated by Linda Gaboriau, Alumnae Theatre

PERFORMANCE DATES:  April 16 – May 1, 2010

The play weaves through Shakespeare’s Richard III, and is set in London in 1483.

The world of The Queens is a world of intrigue and vaulting ambition, played out in corridors and hallways. Each of the characters carries her own unique set of secrets, and we are left with questions and impressions that linger in the imagination. Creating these challenging and remarkable roles will be an unforgettable experience for six women.

CHARACTERS: We are looking for a dynamic and diverse cast to play:

Anne Warwick, future Queen of England (20s)

Isabel Warwick, her sister, George’s wife (20s – early 30s)

Anne Dexter, sister of King Edward, George and Richard (30s – 50s)

Queen Elizabeth Woodville, Queen of England, Edward’s wife (40s – 50s)

Queen Margaret of Anjou, former Queen of England (50s +)

Cecily, Duchess of York, mother of Anne Dexter, Edward, George and Richard (50s +)

AUDITIONS:

  • Monday January 25th, 6:00 -9:00pm
  • Tuesday January 26th 6:00 -9:00pm
  • Sunday January 31st 10am – 5pm.

CALL-BACKS: Saturday February 6th, with rehearsals commencing the following week.

Please prepare two 2-minute monologues from Shakespeare – one comedic and one dramatic.

Workshop: Grant Writing Workshop, Toronto Arts Council

Toronto Arts Council will hold a grant writing workshop for theatre organizations and artist collectives who plan to apply to our Theatre Project competition in 2010.

Through its Theatre Projects program, Toronto Arts Council provides funding support to professional, non-profit, Toronto theatre organizations and collectives to pursue one-time and time-limited theatre projects involving creation, production, presentation, dissemination and/or other activities that contribute to the development of theatre in Toronto.

The workshop, designed for emerging arts organizations, new producers and/or those new to the grants system, will provide tips on writing grants including budgeting and the selection of support material.

The Organization
Soulpepper is an artist-founded, classical repertory company with a three-tiered mandate to present vital Canadian interpretations of history’s great stories, to train the next generation of theatre artists and to enrich and inspire youth through mentorship and access. The organization resides in our own permanent facility, the Young Centre for the Performing Arts, and we will continue to grow our programming and education and outreach activities. The Position
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Director of Development, the Development Events Coordinator will coordinate all development department events for both Soulpepper and the Young Centre to help cultivate and strengthen relationships with existing and prospective donors. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • The creation of an annual events plan and critical path
  • Organizing donor receptions including Opening Night receptions
  • Coordinating Corporate evenings
  • Leading the organization of major annual fundraising events for Soulpepper and/or the Young Centre
  • Planning guided New York Theatre weekends for donors
  • Maintaining event related budgets
  • Developing event related promotional materials and invitations
  • Tracking event-related activity in the Tessitura database
  • Coordinating Soulpepper Salons for donors
  • Other duties as may be required

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have:

  • Hands-on experience in event planning
  • Strong understanding of not-for-profit fundraising practices and principles
  • Proven skills and knowledge in client services and in working with senior volunteers and donors
  • Superior proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook and Excel
  • Strong  analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent planning, organizational, time-management and team building skills
  • Strong interpersonal and oral/written communication skills
  • Self-starter, detail oriented, flexible
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment with multiple deadlines

Education/Experience:

  • Post-secondary degree
  • 2 + years event-planning experience in the not-for-profit sector
