Call for Submissions: Pitch Sessions, Magnetic North

Magnetic North Industry Series 2010
Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario
Magnetic North Theatre Festival June 9 – 19, 2010

The Magnetic North Theatre Festival is the premiere festival of contemporary Canadian theatre in English. Moving between Ottawa and another Canadian city in alternating years, we will celebrate our 8th festival in Kitchener-Waterloo. We will host 9 professional productions from across the country, a student show from Toronto, and myriad ancillary events to enrich your experience. The productions range tremendously in scale and address an array of subjects, in many different styles. What they share is the ability and desire to tour, a notion that is at the very core of Magnetic North.

Magnetic North Industry Series June 13 – 16, 2010
Presenter’s Window June 12 – 16, 2010

Magnetic North draws theatre professionals from across Canada and around the world to facilitate dialogue, networking, collaboration and exchange. From June 12 to 16 you can see all the festival’s shows during the Presenters’ Window and attend the Industry Series (June 13 – 16), which includes a full program of discussions, gatherings, and practical workshops focusing on ideas, skills, inspirations and outcomes relevant to Canadian theatre practitioners. For four days during the Festival, the Industry Series gathers together artists, producers and presenters in all stages of their careers to share, debate and cross-pollinate ideas. The Industry Series concludes with our Pitch Session, where eight new projects will be introduced to a discerning audience of programmers, presenters and fellow artists.

Pitch Session Wednesday, June 16, 1pm – 3pm

The Pitch Session is an ideal opportunity for artists to take their project to the next level, find new collaborators and extend touring opportunities, by presenting their shows, or their ideas in development, to producers, artistic directors, festival curators, presenters and other cultural industry representatives. The pitches take place in a theatrical setting, this year at the Conrad Centre for the Performing Arts. We encourage theatricality in your presentation, though it is not mandatory. The rehearsal the day before the actual event will allow for feedback and revisions if you so require.

Pitch Selection Criteria

  • Applicants for the Pitch Session must be professional artists. It is preferable that those pitching be artistically involved in the project.
  • Projects should have financial and producing strategies in place at the time of application.
  • Presentations are ten (10) minutes in length and may include audio/visual support. We suggest reserving some time for questions.
  • Applicants must be available for a technical rehearsal from 9am – noon, Tuesday, June 15 at the Conrad Centre for the Performing Arts

Submission Details

  • Complete this application form
  • Provide brief biographies of the artists (100 words max) and organizations (150 words max) involved.
  • Provide a summary of the project (250 words max) and relevant logistical details.
  • Provide a list of your audio-visual materials and technical requirements for your pitch (DVD, adaptors, etc).
  • Enclose a non-refundable application fee of $30 (cheque or money order written to the order of Magnetic North Theatre Festival).
  • Successful applicants will be responsible for securing their own travel and accommodation.

Eight (8) projects will be selected by a committee comprised of Artistic Director Ken Cameron, Industry Series Producer Naomi Campbell, Encounters Curator Kris Nelson and Industry Series Associate Producer Megan Flynn.

Please submit your completed application by March 29, 2010
Successful applicants will be notified by April 5, 2010.

Workshops: Forum Theatre Workshops, Mixed Company Theatre

By popular demand, Mixed Company Theatre once again presents its Forum Theatre Workshops this summer. Sessions include a two-part Introduction to Forum Theatre, a two-day exploration of Masks of Manipulations and a three-day Joker/Facilitator workshop. For over 25 years, Mixed Company Artistic Director and primary workshop facilitator Simon Malbogat has engaged audiences and students in the art of Forum Theatre in numerous countries and he continues to be an in-demand educator.

These workshops challenge participants to awaken the internal and external manipulators of human behaviour, and master nuances for guiding groups through hard-to-talk about issues.  Designed for educators, social workers, community leaders, theatre students and professionals, workshop participants will learn the methodology of forum theatre – a UNESCO-recognized tool for positive social change – these professional development workshops create a space for solving problems and practicing solutions. Forum Theatre scenes are quickly created and participants practice various styles of facilitation. By studying themselves and others with input from the group, participants learn conflict resolution, audience/group management, and techniques that further animate an audience to express their opinions and ideas.

Through the fine art of ‘Joking’ – asking questions, making connections, and instructing in the engagement of groups, Forum Theatre audiences and “Spect-actors” – all of Mixed Company Theatre’s high calibre, experienced facilitators deliver solutions to help you address your unique challenges.

Event: The Culture Congress, Harbourfront Centre and The Theatre Centre

March 24-28, 2010
FREE

Artists exchanging ideas, skills and information.

In conjunction with Free Fall ’10, Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre and The Theatre Centre host this year’s Culture Congress, an event bringing together practitioners from local, national and international arts communities for an exchange of practical skills, information sharing and ideas.

In 2010, The Culture Congress will explore how we come together as artist to artist, artist to presenter and artist to audience while examining the topics of mentorship, the Canadian presenting ecology and the building of community. The event takes place over four days through a series of talks, roundtable discussions and social gatherings taking place in venues across the city.

In addition to a select few national curators, we are also hosting a selection of presenters from a specific country to build an invested relationship with the programmers and curators from that particular area. As an extension of our Irish focus in this year’s World Stage season, we are inviting Ireland-based presenters with great perspectives on trends developing in their local artistic communities and the world over. This initiative will help cultivate lasting relationships between Irish presenters, Canadian presenters and Canadian artists, while allowing local and national participants to learn more about the concerns, climate and interests that drive performance creators and presenters in Ireland.

A special initiative involving country-wide participation, we will begin an investigation into the Canadian presenting ecology – examining how this could/should change to respond to the development of contemporary performance and interdisciplinary practice, among others. Participants are invited to contribute to an online mapping project that will begin this dialogue.

The Theatre Centre acknowledges the support of Theatre Junction in making our Irish delegation possible.
