Job Posting: Art and Garden Facilitator, SKETCH

SKETCH is a community arts initiative in Toronto that engages youth living street-involved and homeless in personal and social change.  SKETCH conducts a progressive learning framework through art-making in a multi-discipline studio environment and in the community.  Currently based in downtown Toronto, SKETCH has been developing its concept of community development and youth engagement through arts and culture since 1996.  SKETCH creates environments for youth to express themselves, learn and exchange skills, participate and become leaders in the broader community.

We are currently seeking an Art and Garden Facilitator to work in our Community Garden. The AGF is involved with all aspects of garden programming at SKETCH, including garden maintenance, arts based ideas and projects as relates to the garden project, menu planning, meal preparation, set-up before program, and indoor garden maintenance here at the studio. The AGF is also involved in connecting the Sketch community with garden programming, through engaging other youth in coming to the gardens; and getting feedback on activities within the project.

This is a Part-Time Contract position at SKETCH. It is for $18 per hour, 18 hours per week, for 23 weeks. The contract will begin at the end of April, 2010, and will end at approximately the end of September, 2010.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaboration with youth and Sketch leadership team members to develop plans for Art in the Gardens, planting and garden maintenance
  • Assisting with advertising schedule and workshop activities
  • Making meals in the Community Kitchen, and sharing meal planning
  • Collecting community desires and interests-helping coordinator to best meet these requests by assisting with scheduling of activities and sharing information about community resources and events
  • Supporting workshop leaders in projects and workshops on and off-site
  • Encouraging participation from the SKETCH community
  • Ensuring general care of garden plots and any indoor gardening elements at Sketch
  • Creating artwork within the project for the purpose of inspiring others and for furthering their own arts practice
  • Evaluating at the end of each activity and at the end of the project with time to create recommendations for next season as well as collect resources for the Sketch community

Qualifications

  • Experience with arts-based workshop facilitation;
  • Experience in community gardens, garden planning and plant care;
  • Experience with bringing seasonal foods into the kitchen, and a comfort level with cooking for large groups;
    • Experience with youth at risk, and/or knowledge of the street-involved and homeless community in Toronto;
    • A strong anti-oppression framework; and a
    • Demonstrated commitment to and awareness of community-based arts initiatives.

Job Posting: Artistic Producer, Theatre North West

Theatre North West is pleased to invite applications for the position of Artistic Producer.

TNW produces and presents four to five plays each season in its own fully equipped 228-seat theatre.  The company has 3,874 subscribers (one of Canada’s highest per capita) with almost all performances sold out. As  the leading arts organization in the region, TNW enjoys outstanding support from one of Canada’s most enthusiastic theatre cities.  Prince George is the province’s largest city north of the Thompson/Okanagan and is the regional centre for commerce, medicine, education, and government.

The theatre has an annual operating budget of approximately $900,000+/- and is deficit free, with restricted reserve funds and an endowment.  Revenue sources are diverse including funding from all three levels of government. TNW is highly assessed by the Peer Committees at the Canada Council. A member of PACT, working under the Canadian Theatre Agreement, TNW contracts artists from across Canada to work with its resident staff.

TNW has been led by its founders since its incorporation in 1994. To facilitate a smooth transition and support the incoming Artistic Producer, the Board of Directors has budgeted for a Staged Succession. The start date is negotiable.

The Artistic Producer is responsible for the artistic and financial leadership of the organization.  He/she will work with the Board and staff and must be committed to fulfilling the mission and policies of Theatre North West.

The ideal candidate will have the following general qualifications and skills:

  • Experience in the professional Canadian theatre scene.
  • A passionate commitment to regional theatre and understand the business of theatre production.
  • Be equally competent in dealing with the artistic and business aspects of a professional theatre.
  • Ability to provide inspirational leadership.
  • Proven financial management and asset protection skills, with experience working within a balanced budget and maintaining a financially healthy professional theatre.

Specifically the ideal candidate will:

  • Have the artistic judgement necessary to assemble, guide, and inspire artists and practitioners to the highest standard.
  • Sustain the theatre’s outstanding output of quality productions that have special relevance for the region.
  • Sustain TNW’s excellent relations and communications with the audience and community at large.
  • Be eager to embrace the successful programming model TNW has established for the region.
  • Be experienced and skilled in working with funders.
  • Believe that all Canadians deserve good art and be proud to be a part of those artists who serve rural Canada.

Based on experience, salary will range from $50,000+ to $60,000+.  

Situated on the Fraser River, Prince George is mid-way between Edmonton and Prince Rupert on the Pacific Ocean with Jasper, Alberta in the Rocky Mountains, being 375 km east.  Its market area population is approximately 100,000. The community has an array of amenities and ready access to year round recreational activities along with extensive sports and educational facilities including a university and a college.  The location provides an attractive standard of living and very affordable housing.
