Call for Submissions: New Opera 101: A Master Class/Workshop for Singer/Pianist Duos, Tapestry New Opera

On January 22, 2011, Tapestry New Opera will offer an all day event for six singer/pianist duos. Managing Artistic Director Wayne Strongman and Studio Company members Xin Wang, soprano, and Peter McGillivray, baritone will be the clinicians for the Master Class and Workshop components. They will discuss the role of singers and pianists in the process of creating, developing and producing new opera. Each duo will be coached by the clinicians in two assigned arias from the soon to be published Tapestry Songbook. Clinicians will share their techniques of new opera score preparation in an ensemble reading workshop. Following the master class, duos will be given the opportunity to perform in the first ever concert of The Tapestry Songbook, open to the public.
New Opera 101 is intended not only as a tool for the growth of artists but as a way for Tapestry to discover emerging talent.

Applications are available online by visiting www.tapestrynewopera.com/the-lab/new-opera-101/ (as of October 1) with submissions due in the Tapestry offices on Friday October 29, 2010. Singers and pianists apply as a duo.

Applicants must jointly submit an application form, two letters of recommendation, one CD of the duo performing two contemporary works, one of which must be in English, and an application fee of $10 payable by cheque, Visa or Mastercard.

Successful applicants will be notified by email on November 5, 2010.

Each duo will be assigned two arias from the Tapestry Songbook. Music will be sent upon receipt of a program fee of $200 per duo. Program fees must be paid no later than November 19, 2010.

New Opera 101 participants will receive free admission to the Tapestry Songbook concert. Otherwise, tickets are available for $20 for students/arts workers and at the regular rate of $25.
A limited number of auditors will be admitted to the program at a cost of $25 (or $45 including concert admission.)

Call for Submissions: New Play Contest, 2011 Toronto Fringe

The 2011 Toronto Fringe New Play Contest sponsored by Exclamation Foundation in association with macIDeas

Exclamation Foundation and macIDeas are thrilled once again to support the development of new Canadian plays through their sponsorship of the Toronto Fringe New Play Contest.

Mail-in or drop off the completed entry form, a copy of the script and the entry fee starting on October 4th at 10:00am. The final deadline for all entries is October 25, 2010 at 5:00pm or when 80 entries have been received.

First Prize is the following:

  • A free spot in the 2011 Toronto Fringe Festival, July 6-17,2011 for the winning play (worth $725). The winning playwright will have to abide by all of the policies of The Toronto Fringe Festival.
  • A cash prize of $1250 courtesy of Exclamation Foundation and macIDeas to go towards the production expenses of their Fringe production. A basic expense report will be requested.
  • Production consultation courtesy of Exclamation Foundation and macIDeas.

Second Prize is $200 cash

Third Prize is $100 cash.

The winning plays will be announced at the Fringe Lottery Party, to be held on November 29 2010, at Theatre Passe Muraille.  All entrants will receive notification of the decision by e-mail prior to the lottery party.

Call for Submissions: Unsolicited Scripts and Project Submission Guidelines, Canadian Stage

Canadian Stage accepts unsolicited scripts and previously produced projects for consideration for production.

Submissions of both scripts and trans-disciplinary projects will be accepted in hard copy format only (no electronic submissions). DVDs and support materials are welcome. Submissions are reviewed by a reading committee made up of staff, artists and community members, and each project will receive a response within six months. Please note we do not provide a critique of your script or dramaturgical feedback.

Guidelines:

  • Please provide two (2) copies of all materials including script or production project details including an outline of the play’s developmental history, artists involved and any other support materials.
  • When possible, our committee members read each script blindly before looking at supplementary materials; please do not include your name on each page of your script.
  • Please include a large self-addressed stamped envelope if you wish to have your materials returned.
  • Our committee will review a script or project once.
  • We will only review one script or project per writer per season.

Job Posting: Property Management Coordinator, Artscape

Artscape is currently seeking a Property Management Coordinator to join its team. Reporting to the Manager of Buildings, the Property Management Coordinator supports the maintenance and capital repair activities in Artscape’s portfolio of building facilities as well as new construction and renovation projects under development. Currently these facilities and projects include the Parkdale Arts & Cultural Centre, Artscape Liberty Village, Artscape West Queen West, Artscape Distillery Studios, Artscape Gibraltar Point, Artscape Wychwood Barns, Artscape Triangle Lofts, Artscape Shaw Street Centre, Theatre Passe Muraille, the Regent Parks Arts & Cultural Centre, and Artscape’s head office.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assisting the Manager of Buildings in the following activities:

  • Communicating with Tenant Services & coordinating maintenance requests from tenants
  • Preparing & maintaining Building Operations Manuals & Logs
  • Coordinating activities of Building Superintendents
  • Establishing and maintaining comprehensive files on suppliers, contractors, trades, and consultants
  • Preparing and disseminating requests for qualifications, requests for proposals, fee proposals, and tender packages
  • Comparing and reviewing competing proposals and quotes for supplies and services
  • Preparing and/or reviewing contracts with consultants, construction managers, trades, etc.
  • Tracking contract administration and coordination
  • Preparing & tracking  purchase orders
  • Maintaining professional relationships with long term and occasional service providers under contract with Artscape
  • Where required, coordinating Property Department accounts payable to assist Finance Department
  • Inspecting building infrastructure systems, interiors and envelopes

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • General experience in property management and contract coordination
  • A general understanding of building systems including mechanical, electrical, structural, roof and envelope, communication, security, automation systems and landscaping
  • Familiarity with current health and safety practices and requirements
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills and good judgment
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to trouble-shoot and solve problems
  • Experience in the non-profit sector, a background in arts and culture, and familiarity with Toronto’s arts community is considered an asset
  • Familiarity with green building and operation strategies is an asset
  • Excellent computer skills required, familiarity with CAD programs is considered an asset
