Workshop: Psychology of Performance Series (NEW), Artists Health Centre Foundation

Skill enhancement and coping strategies with Madeleine Hallé, Senior Performance Psychologist with Cirque du Soleil

Through theory and practice, participants will explore tools to manage stress, increase self-esteem and confidence, and develop visualization techniques. Friday will examine stress management and Saturday will focus on confidence and self-esteem. Both days will explore the integration of visualization techniques into performance situations, with emphasis on:

  • Emotional control
  • Developing concentration
  • Achieving peak performance

Madeleine Hallé is a performance and sports psychologist who has worked with Cirque de Soleil for the past ten years.  With over twenty years of experience in her field, and with extensive graduate training in psychology and kinetics including a doctorate in sports psychology, Madeleine is uniquely qualified to discuss and illuminate the psychological aspects of performance.

Call for Submissions: Distillery Art Market, Artscape

Attention Artists, Craftspeople, Designer/Makers and Food Artisans Weekend Outdoor Exhibition Opportunities
REMINDER: Submission Deadline — March 11, 2011

Artscape is currently accepting submissions from visual artists, craftspeople, designer/makers and food artisans who wish to participate in the Distillery Art Market, taking place from April 15 to October 16, 2011. The submissions deadline is March 11, 2011. The Call for Submissions and Application Form are available at www.distilleryartmarket.ca.

The Distillery Art Market will feature exhibitors in various outdoor spaces at The Distillery Historic District over the course of the spring, summer and fall starting April 15, 2011. The Distillery Art Market is an exhibition designed to produce a creator-to-market opportunity for artists, craftspeople, designer/makers and food artisans. The markets will take place for 27 consecutive weeks until the final market weekend of October 16, 2011.

Applicants can choose to participate in one weekend or a series of weekends for the Distillery Art Market’s duration. Artists, craftspeople, designer/makers and food artisans have the opportunity to utilize provided art carts (allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis pending jury approval) or a 10’ x 10’ tent.

Participants in the Distillery Art Market will be selected by a professional jury, with consideration to diversity of medium and quality of work being sold. Jewellery artists will not be considered at this time due to the abundant representation of jewellery available at shops on-site. Food artisans will be considered provided their product is unique from the existing businesses at The Distillery Historic District. All products must be handmade in Canada by the vendor.

The Distillery Historic District has been labeled as a “must-visit” location by the New York Times, Frommer’s, Toronto Life and The Globe and Mail. The 13-acre arts and entertainment district comprises more than 40 heritage buildings and 10 streets, and is the largest collection of Victorian era industrial architecture in North America. The Distillery Historic District attracts between 2,000 – 5,000 tourists and Torontonians each weekend – providing a fantastic opportunity for creators to sell their work, expand their contact list and network with other creators in a completely unique outdoor exhibition environment.

The Distillery Art Market is a collaboration between Artscape and The Distillery Historic District

Space for Rent: Performance Studio and Programming Studio, Artscape Shaw Street Centre

Artscape is currently accepting applications from non-profit arts and community organizations and artist collectives interested in leasing ground floor public access space for performance and/or public programming activities at Artscape Shaw Street Centre, Artscape’s latest development in the West Queen West arts community.

Artscape received well over 80 submissions to the initial Call for Submissions released in July 2010 and is now seeking performance and programming tenants to round out the ground floor activities. The performance studio is 4,600 sq. ft. and the programming studio is 2,000 square feet.

The application submission deadline is March 17, 2011.

Internship: 1 Part Time Production Assistant, Nightwood Theatre

Nightwood Theatre is seeking 1 part time production assistant for our upcoming fundraising production.  The role would be ideal for those looking to build their experience in the area of stage management.

Previous interns with Nightwood are welcome to apply.

Commitment

  • From March 22 to June 5 attend rehearsals on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:30pm – 9:00pm and Sundays from 5:00pm -8:30pm.
  • Be available from June 6-June 11, 2011 for the tech week with shows on Thursday June 9 at 8pm, Friday June 10 at 8pm and Saturday June 11 at 2pm and 8pm.
  • There is some flexibility in shifts during the rehearsal process, please speak to Hilary Green if you have questions (contact info below)

Potential Tasks

  • Assisting the Stage Manager in setting up the rehearsal hall and recording cues in a prompt script.
  • Cueing the actors to go on stage.
  • Helping to maintain props and costumes.
  • Presetting props and costumes during rehearsal and performances.

Required Skills

  • Intermediate skills in Word and Excel.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Previous experience in stage management or a post secondary degree in theatre preferred.

Call for Submissions: Pitch New Works Now, The International Society for the Performing Arts

For the first time in fifteen years ISPA – The International Society for the Performing Arts –will be holding its international Congress in Toronto, June 15 – 18, 2011. Toronto Arts Council’s ED Claire Hopkinson is Co-Chair of the Congress, along with Jennifer Gordon and Mervon Mehta, leading a local organizing committee comprised of many of Toronto‘s performing arts organizations.

ISPA is a network of performing arts professionals who come together with the shared goal of strengthening the arts internationally by building leadership ability, recognizing and discussing field-wide trends and deepening global exchange through the arts.

The 2011 ISPA conference “Groundbreaking” will host an important showcase opportunity PITCH NEW WORKS NOW. PITCH demonstrations will be presented to an international audience representing more than 30 countries around the world, including some of the world’s most significant presenting organizations, independent artists, performing arts organizations, artist managers, cultural policy groups, foundations, consultants, and many others.

To participate in PITCH, registration for the conference is not required; however, for those interested in attending the ISPA conference, registration will be open in March and available on the ISPA website.
Application and Selection Process

Candidates should download and complete the Pitch New Works Now Application Form and submit all required material by Friday, March 25, 2011.  This is a final deadline, no extensions or late submissions will be accepted.  All material should be submitted in English and ISPA regrets that the application materials will not be returned.  Applications will be reviewed by the 2011 ISPA Pitch Committee: Lieven Bertels (Holland Festival), Linda Brumbach (Pomegranate Arts), and Chris Lorway (Luminato).  Candidates will be notified of their application status by Friday, April 15, 2011.

Event: Film Camp for Teens, Centre for the Arts

At this five-day intensive camp, teenagers will gain firsthand experience in professional filmmaking.  They will produce, write, direct, light, shoot, act in, and edit their own films. Daily workshops led by industry professionals are immediately followed by film shoots, putting these creative and technical ideas into practical use. This training builds towards the successful completion of the teens’ final short films. Regardless of their level of experience, the teens will have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of the filmmaking process. Everyone will take home a copy of the films, and on Friday afternoon there will be a celebration and screening for family and friends!

New Proposed Integrated Accessibility Regulation: Feedback by March 18th

The Ontario Government is seeking public review and comment on the proposed Integrated Accessibility Regulation, under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005.

Accessibility standards are the rules that businesses and organizations in Ontario will have to follow to identify, remove and prevent barriers to accessibility. The Customer Service Standards has been legislated and all nonprofits and charities in Ontario must comply with a series of requirements by January 1, 2012.
