Audition: Male Clarinet Player, Theatre Passe Muraille production, in partnership with Convergence Theatre

SEARCHING FOR A MALE CLARINET PLAYER FOR A THEATRE PROJECT IN TORONTO AND OTTAWA

PROJECT:
YICHUD (Seclusion) by Julie Tepperman
A Theatre Passe Muraille production, in partnership with Convergence Theatre
Co-directed by Aaron Willis and Richard Greenblatt
Production Design: Beth Kates
Musical Direction and Original compositions: Aviva Chernick
Cast: Richard Greenblatt, Diane Flacks, Jordan Pettle, Michael Rubenfeld, Julie
Tepperman & Aaron Willis

ABOUT THE PLAY: YICHUD (Seclusion) is a play that explores the intimate moments surrounding the arranged marriage of a young Orthodox Jewish couple, Rachel Blitzer and Chaim Berman. The action of the play takes place all over the theatre, and the performance space is transformed to resemble the interior of a synagogue. A live band consisting of accordion, drums, and clarinet plays throughout, and the audience are made to feel like guests at the wedding the moment they enter the space.

After a week-long run this coming May at Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto, YICHUD (Seclusion) will transfer to Academic Hall at the University of Ottawa where it has been invited to be the Gala Opener at the 2011 Magnetic North Theatre Festival.

PERFORMANCES:

  • In Toronto at Theatre Passe Muraille from May 21-29
  • In Ottawa as part of the Magnetic North Theatre Festival from June 4-6

REHEARSALS:

  • In Toronto from May 12 – May 20
  • In Ottawa from June 2 – June 3

FEE: The fee is $720.00 per week for a 3 ½ week gig, the half week pro-rated.
You must be available for all rehearsals and performances between May 12 and June 6.

REQUIREMENTS:
We are looking for the woodwind player in the trio, and need a clarinettist with a strong sense of Chassidic / klezmer music.

The music consists of fairly simple klezmer compositions and many repetitive chassidic wedding tunes that are easy to sing and dance to.

You would be attired as an orthodox man – black suit, white shirt, tzizit (prayer fringes) and black fedora. Orthodox men are often bearded – ability/inclination to grow a beard is appreciated but not necessary.

INTERVIEWS
Interviews will be held during the first week of March, 2011. You will be asked to prepare a simple Klezmer tune in advance – we will send you the music.

CONTACT:
Interested candidates should submit their interest and performance history and/or resume to Aaron Willis at: aaronw@passemuraille.on.ca
