Job Posting: Project Coordinator, Diasporic Genius

Position Location: Toronto, Ontario
Start Date: Immediately
Compensation Type: Salary – Competitive

Diasporic Genius is a new organization with a vision and a plan that we believe will help take what is already special about Toronto and transform it, so that we become one of the most evolved cities on the planet.

Toronto stands in a unique position at the beginning of the second decade of the new millennium: a city with great human, social and creative resources that has the potential to realize a flourishing future. We have within our borders the wisdom of the world, sparked by a meeting of the greatest ingathering of Diasporic peoples the world has yet seen with a settled culture that is progressive, open, and increasingly innovative.

Diasporic Genius has developed a three-part program, encompassing performance, education and community, with the conviction that these can be central in transforming our city. The performances will involve music-centered, multidisciplinary works that exhibit the diversity within Toronto, and the new forms of hybridity that Diasporic Genius will create. The education component will centre around an apprenticeship program, geared to help young, emerging artists develop their own unique visions and engage with the community. The community piece will be achieved through the development of neighbourhood-specific and story-inspired 21st Century Village squares – physical spaces that combine artisans, markets, performances, cafes and physical urban infrastructure to help connect the community.

Position Overview:
The 21st Century Village Squares will be community-created centers of learning, celebration, commerce, markets, food, local agriculture, architecture, art, music theatre and science. They will be the engines of a connected, multifaceted cultural transformation.

The 21st Century Village Squares will be real locations of complex infrastructure equally informed by the experience and received wisdom of the inhabitants of each neighbourhood under consideration. They will be built by a meeting of the model created by this organization and its advisors with the specific, self-organized vision of the people who will participate and use each Square.

The Squares will start with the flag of community-through-story planted in a wind-swept plot of grass, or underused strip mall, or parking lot, and will grow organically, as form both follows and anticipates use, knitting together current infrastructure with beautyrich, multi-purpose development.

As a program coordinator for the 21st Century Village Squares, the chosen candidate will need to be dynamic, organized and engaged. We are seeking an individual with significant program management experience, who has a proven ability to manage relationships and coordinate a variety of stakeholders. The 21st Century Village Squares will be an entirely new way of rethinking civic engagement. It is crucial that the program coordinator is ready to adapt to significant obstacles and challenges, and come up with creative ways of solving real issues and leverage different, unprecedented opportunities. Cultural sensitivity will be critical, as will confidence, fearlessness, dedication and persistence.

This position will start as a 2-month contract with the possibility of an extension dependent on successful program development. The Program Coordinator will plan and manage the pilot project at Thorncliffe Park and will work closely with the Thorncliffe Neighbourhood Office.

Auditions: After Mrs. Rochester By Polly Teale, Alumnae Theatre

After Mrs. Rochester By Polly Teale
Directed by Laura Roald
Performance dates: September 23 – October 8, 2011

British dramatist Polly Teale introduces the demons that pursued novelist Jean Rhys to those of Rhys’ alter ego, Bertha Mason Rochester, in a battle for sanity.

Brilliant, bold and troubled Dominican writer Jean Rhys felt a strong connection to the fictional character of Bertha Mason, the mad first wife of Mr. Rochester in Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel Jane Eyre.

Rhys wrote her acclaimed 1966 novel Wide Sargasso Sea from the perspective of Rochester’s reluctant bride and Polly Teale has, in turn, produced After Mrs. Rochester, a play which not only re-imagines Rhys’ creative process but also examines its very real toll on her life.

THE ROLES

  • Jean (F, 60s) needs an actor with stamina and confidence. This character is onstage for most of the show.
  • Bertha (F, 30s) the “madwoman in the attic”; this actor should have a background in physical theatre. She is onstage for the entire show.
  • Ella (F, early 20s) this actor plays Jean starting as a young girl through to her 40s and, again, is onstage for much of the show.
  • Various roles (3 female actors and 2 male actors, various ages): One of the female actors needs to be a woman of colour. These actors should either have a background in physical theatre or otherwise be in good physical condition.

The director is particularly interested in seeing actors who have experience in collective creation.

AUDITION DATES

  • Wednesday July 6th from 6:30 to 10:00pm
  • Thursday July 7th from 6:30 to 10:00pm
  • Saturday July 9th from 10:00am to 6:00pm

PREPARATION

  • Please prepare a short (2-3 min.) contemporary monologue.
  • You may also be asked to read from the script or do a short improvisation.
  • Please, for the love of God, read the play before auditioning.
  • Reading copies are available at the Toronto Reference Library, 5th floor — Performing Arts desk.
  • Please bring your photo and résumé. Call backs will be held during the week of July 11th.

TO BOOK AN AUDITION TIME

Please leave a message on the audition line at 416-364-4170 ext 3 or e-mail GoAlumnae@gmail.com.

Auditions will be held at the Alumnae Theatre, 70 Berkeley Street (SW corner of Berkeley and Adelaide)

Alumnae Theatre is a non-Equity/ACTRA theatre company that encourages diversity in its membership and casting.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS DEADLINE: 5PM, Friday September 2nd 2011

Produced by Buddies in Bad Times Theatre for over 30 years, the Rhubarb Festival has offered artists a critic-free environment to experiment with new explorations in performance. Rhubarb continuously reconsiders the possibilities for performance – how we create it, how we present it and how we experience it. It is an invitation for artists to take risks, investigate new directions and challenge conventions. It is an opportunity for adventurous audiences to journey off predictable paths. Rhubarb provides artists with a rare opportunity to present work to a large and enthusiastic audience. Many Rhubarb shows have gone on to be further developed and presented in Toronto, across Canada and internationally.

GENERAL CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Rhubarb seeks proposals for new, not previously produced performances (30 minutes or less) for the 33rd Annual Rhubarb Festival. Submissions are encouraged from both established and emerging artists working in the areas of contemporary theatre, performance art, dance, music, interdisciplinary and hybrid forms. Of particular interest are projects, approaches and ideas that are new territory for the artist and the medium.

Selected projects will be featured during the festival (February 8-19, 2011) and will receive technical, production, administrative, promotional and artistic support. Invited companies will have the opportunity to access free rehearsal space leading up to Rhubarb. In addition to an honorarium, festival artists also receive an unlimited artist pass, allowing them to see work for free by local, national and international artists over the course of two weeks.

RHUBARB 2012 SPECIAL PROJECT CALLS

MOBILE WORKS DEADLINE: 5PM Friday September 2, 2011
Building on the success of last year’s Mobile Works series, reaching 10,000+ viewers, Rhubarb 2012 invites a new round of proposals for performances that begin elsewhere in the city and converge at Buddies (12 Alexander Street, Toronto). Performance interventions, audio led experiences, performances that intersect public and private space, performances on public transit, flash mobs, etc. that eventually end at Buddies are encouraged. Participatory projects and online performances that are developed in the lead up to Rhubarb and culminate in another form of presentation at Buddies are also welcome. The proposal should take into consideration not only the festival audiences but also the general public, unsuspecting and accidental audiences who may stumble upon or intersect with the work.

ONE-TO-ONE PERFORMANCE DEADLINE: 5PM Friday September 2, 2011
New this year! Considering notions of intimacy and personal interaction in performance and everyday life, Rhubarb seeks proposals for short one-to-one works, crafted for one performer and one audience member at a time.
