Event: Tomson Highway Cabaret of Songs, An Exclusive Benefit On October 27th, Factory Theatre

Factory Theatre is pleased to announce that acclaimed Canadian playwright Tomson Highway has generously offered to present a special one-night cabaret event, Cabaret of Songs, in support of Factory Theatre on Thursday, October 27th, 2011. Managing Director Sara Meurling says, “The Studio Theatre will be transformed into an intimate cabaret environment that features gala preshow cocktails and canapés starting at 6:30 p.m., prior to the 8 p.m. exclusive concert featuring the incomparable Tomson Highway.”

The evening will feature Peruvian-Canadian vocalist Patricia Cano and Cree playwright/novelist Tomson Highway on piano. They will perform 12 songs from Highway’s newest play, The (Post) Mistress, a one-woman musical that has played twice in Canada – Magnus Theatre and Ship’s Company Theatre. “I’m a trained classical pianist who, by accident, ended up as a playwright and novelist.” With Cano, he has presented his “Cabaret of Songs” concert in over 20 cities across Canada and Europe.  “As my models for this kind of ‘theatrical’ song-writing,” says Highway, “I like to think in terms of Kurt Weill and Cole Porter, artists I adore. For the ‘Cabaret of Songs’ concert at Factory, think Weill and Porter… with Cree, French, English and Spanish lyrics – a cultural product unique to Canada.”

Vocalist Patricia Cano was born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario to parents who had just emigrated from Lima, Peru. Spanish is her Native tongue with French and English coming a close second and third. She is a graduate of the drama program at the University of Toronto, worked in Paris, France for four years with Arianne Mnouchikine’s world-famous Theatre du Soleil, has toured the world with Mr. Highway, performing cabarets of songs from his various shows, and works regularly with Rio de Janeiro-based Brazilian guitarist extraordinaire Carlos Bernardo. In 2009, she released her first CD, “This is the New World.”

Tomson Highway was born in a snow bank on the Manitoba/Nunavut border to a family of nomadic caribou hunters. He had the great privilege of growing up in two languages, neither of which was French or English but, rather, Cree, his mother tongue, and Dene, the language of the neighbouring nation, a people with whom they roamed and hunted.  Today, he enjoys an international career as playwright, novelist, and pianist/songwriter.  Tomson Highway is the author of universal hits such as The Rez Sisters, celebrating its 25th anniversary production at Factory Theatre November 5 – December 11, Dry Lips Oughta Move to Kapuskasing, Rose, Ernestine Shuswap Gets Her Trout, the best-selling novel Kiss of the Fur Queen and his new musical, The (Post) Mistress. For many years Mr. Highway ran Canada’s premiere aboriginal theatre company, Native Earth Performing Arts, from which has emerged an entire generation of aboriginal playwrights and theatre artists. Tomson is the recipient of eight honorary doctorates, is a member of the Order of Canada, and was named by Maclean’s Magazine as one of the 100 most important people in Canadian history. (www.tomsonhighway.com)

The Highway/Cano “Cabaret of Songs” tickets for the Thursday, October 27 concert event are limited, and it is recommended that interested patrons book early. Tickets are $150, with a tax receipt issued for the maximum allowable amount.  Call the Factory Theatre Box Office at (416) 504-9971 to order tickets. (www.factorytheatre.ca)

Announcement: ARTSPOND, AGILO ARTS

ARTSPOND is an AGILO ARTS-led, open-source, online database project scheduled for initial release in late 2012.

Featuring detailed profiles on over 4,000 inter/national venues, presenters, platforms, residencies and festivals with established ties to dance (encompassing support of both contemporary and traditional forms; as well as over 15,000 elementary, secondary and post-secondary schools in Canada alone), the mission of ARTSPOND is to assist independent artists and companies with researching and prioritizing their best opportunities for touring, residencies and outreach programming in new markets in an efficient, cost-effective manner.

Published presenter profiles will include:

  • current artistic and administrative contact information
  • venue & audience demographics
  • programming vision, history, interests and focus
  • projected box office and artist fee ranges
  • preferred application method (and dates/fees, if applicable)
  • links to other presenters and venues within the same region
  • and other related information to assist users in prioritizing prospects

To see what this information may actually look like, download a draft single presenter record detail as a PDF. This is a an early sample only, and not a complete version. Orange represents presenter name; blue, event name; red, venue name.

A user-friendly interface will allow users to search the collected profiles by name, region, venue size, programming interests and other custom reports and searches.

Cultivating bridges to the rest of the world, ARTSPOND will be updated on a regular basis and will be available to artists and companies from across Canada.

THE BENEFITS
The primary goal of this project is to empower dance artists and companies from across Canada — regardless of size, practice or region — with equal access to information and tools necessary to support growth into new markets nationally and internationally. By sharing the proposed research with the entire dance milieu, we hope to:

  • Reduce unnecessary duplication of research labour among multiple artists and companies – thus freeing up creative time and managerial resources better spent elsewhere
  • Cultivate a deeper awareness and appreciation for creative opportunities currently available nationally and internationally – thus building over time a sector more attuned and prepared to compete successfully in new markets
  • Nurture ecologies of collaboration, where the sharing of resources, information and ideas are embraced at a deeper level across the sector. In a diminishing economy with increased demand and competition among artists, we hope the success of this project will encourage individuals and companies to begin embracing other types of innovative networks, partnerships and sharing for community benefit
  • Address systemic shortfalls in the representation and management of the sector by empowering individual artists and organizations with an equal understanding of the current resources, needs, interest and focus of presenters in the field.

THE COST
As an open-source project, our wish is to publish ARTSPOND for free to all Canadians. However, over time, the cost of building and maintaining the database will be considerable. Without sufficient private or public sector investment, a modest subscription fee will need to be levied on each user to help ensure the information remains relevant and current over time. Ultimately the fees would be tiered to budget size, and would depend on the total number of users subscribed to the database, but we would strive to keep the fee under $50 or $25 per year for independent artists with limited resources.

WHAT’S NEXT? HOW CAN I HELP?
We need your help! If you are excited by this project, please take a moment to sign our PETITION, or email us a letter of support attention to :

ARTSPOND Support: info (at) agilo (dot) ca.

The deadline for signing the petition or submitting letters of support is NOVEMBER 7, 2011.

All names on the petition and letters received will be used as support material for funding applications to public and private sector agencies at the municipal, provincial and national level.
