Call for Submissions: Theatre Creators’ Reserve, Mixed Company Theatre

For the third consecutive year, Mixed Company Theatre (MCT) has been named a recommender for the Ontario Arts Council (OAC) Theatre Creators’ Reserve program. Through funds from the OAC program, MCT can assist Ontario-based professional theatre creators, and informal collectives of creators, by funding them to create work.

Mixed Company Theatre asks applicants to submit a project outline, containing objectives, timeline, and budget, no later than November 3, 2011. Announcement: Jorn Weisbrodt Announced As New Artistic Director, Luminato

After a global executive search conducted by Searchlight Recruitment Inc., Luminato, Toronto Festival of Arts and Creativity, is delighted to announce Jorn Weisbrodt as its new Artistic Director.

For the past five years Jorn Weisbrodt has served as Director of The Watermill Center and as Executive Director for RW Work Ltd. representing and managing the work of legendary visual artist, theatre and opera director Robert Wilson. Based in New York, Weisbrodt has an international profile of collaborating on landmark projects with some of the most prestigious arts organizations around the globe, including La Scala di Milano, the Spoleto Festival, the Barbican Centre in London, the Bolshoi Theatre, the Lincoln Centre Festival, and the Manchester
International Festival. Weisbrodt has also been instrumental in the highly anticipated remount of Einstein on the Beach which will receive its North American premiere at Luminato in June 2012. At The Watermill Center, Weisbrodt has been responsible for incubating cross-disciplinary performances and installations and launching an international artistic residency for emerging artists.

Prior to his work in the United States, Weisbrodt held numerous positions in Germany, including Artistic Production Director at Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Co-Founder of Zwischenpalastnutzung, and Assistant Director at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin, presenting new work from artists such as Pascal Dusapin, Herzog and de Meuron, Marina Abramovic, Antony Hegarty, Tony Oursler, Dan Graham, and Hans Werner Henze. An active leader within the contemporary arts scene, Jorn has served on the artistic advisory committees of the Lower Manhattan Cultural Trust, and the French American Cultural Exchange, among others.

“We received submissions from incredibly talented candidates, including a number of Canadians”, said Tony Gagliano, Chair of the Board for Luminato. “We were very impressed by Jorn’s vision for Luminato’s future and his dedication to making arts an essential part of the community here in Toronto.”

Peter Herrndorf, CEO of the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, served on the Artistic Director Search Committee. “I was delighted to be a part of making the decision to hire an exciting young talent like Jorn Weisbrodt. I am confident that he will make a valuable contribution to Canada’s artistic landscape while using his international standing to champion our work on the world stage.”

Working with the CEO and programming team, the Artistic Director is responsible for setting Luminato’s artistic vision, including selecting local, national, and international commissioning projects, developing collaborations, and curating a diverse programmatic line-up of free and ticketed events across theatre, dance, music, literature, magic, film, food, fashion and art.

“Luminato has established itself as the most important North American Festival encompassing all the creative fields. I am thrilled to build on the work of my colleague Chris Lorway and continue to open the door further to bring Toronto to the world and the world to Toronto,” said Jorn Weisbrodt. “My partner and I are looking forward to making a home in Toronto, collaborating with the incredible artists and institutions that work here and becoming a part of the city and its cultural life.”

Glenn Lowry, Director of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City and former Director of the Art Gallery of Ontario, commented of the appointment, “Jorn Weisbrodt is exceptionally talented and creative and will bring an enormous amount of experience and energy to Toronto. He has the vision and the drive to ensure that Luminato continues to grow and thrive in new and exciting ways.”

Jorn Weisbrodt will take up his duties in Toronto in January, 2012.

The sixth edition of Luminato takes place from June 8-17, 2012.

Internship: D-GAP Apprentice, Diasporic Genius

Diasporic Genius has a mission to promote the creative potential of Toronto’s diverse communities and to produce new forms of civic engagement. Founded by award-winning musician and composer David Buchbinder, Diasporic Genius operates in three interwoven spheres of activity: Performance, Education and Community. A main component of our Education stream is the Diasporic Genius Apprenticeship Program (D-GAP) which will run from October to December, 2011. D-GAP is a program of cascading apprenticeships for young artists at key points in their development. This program is designed for recent post-secondary graduates, as well as self-taught and self-created young, emerging artists.

Our primary objective is to mentor the next wave of artists in the process and experience of developing an artistic vision. This vision will be personal and will also connect with the energy and creative spirit contained in the place where we live.

As a D-GAP Apprentice you will:

  • be an integral member of a multidiscplinary performance emsemble
  • engaged in a “new hybridity” between disciplines
  • be mentored by senior artists in your field
  • work with senior artists in other fields
  • engage in activities surrounding story and performance, with the direction of community arts professionals
  • experience total immersion in the creation, production, PR & marketing of the music-centered show Tumbling Into Light.

Tumbling Into Light was first created by David Buchbinder, Andrea Nann and Bruce McDonald and first performed in January 2010 to sold-out houses at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts. It mixes music, dance, and video through the creation of a unique formal hybridity. The current run will take place December 1-4 at the Enwave Theatre, Harbourfront Centre.

The Pilot Project will accept four apprentices for the term of October–December, 2011.

  • Bring what you learn into a community arts setting through particapation in our 21st Century Village Squares Pilot Project in Thorncliffe Park, interweaving professional and community arts

**Per diems of $15/day for the rehearsal/performance period and a 1-month Metropass provided

Call for Submissions: 2012 Toronto Fringe New Play Contest, Toronto Fringe Festival

Deadline October 24th, 2011

The 2012 Toronto Fringe New Play Contest sponsored by Exclamation Foundation in association with macIDeas.

The purpose of the Toronto Fringe New Play Contest is to support the development of new Canadian plays with sponsorship from Exclamation Foundation and macIDeas.

The contest is open to all playwrights/writers who are permanent residents of Canada.  Only one entry per playwright is permitted.
Submit a completed entry form, a copy of the script and the entry fee.  The final deadline for all entries is October 24th, 2010 at 5:00pm or when 80 entries have been received.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • Plays must be a new, original work.
  • Plays which have previously placed first, second or third place in the Fringe New Play Contest are not eligible.
  • Plays must not have been previously produced however plays that have been work-shopped are eligible.
  • Plays entered must have a performance time of 90 minutes or less.
  • The contest is open to permanent residents of Canada.
  • One application per playwright allowed.
  • The winner must use the Fringe slot to produce the play that was submitted to the contest.

FIRST PLACE PRIZE: $1250 cash!
Plus a spot in the 2012 Toronto Fringe Festival ($725 value)
and consultation from macIDeas ($500 value)

Second Place: $200 cash
Third Place: $100 cash

The winning plays will be announced at the Fringe Lottery Party, to be held on November 28th 2011. All entrants will receive notification of the decision by e-mail prior to the lottery party.
