Call for Submissions: Theatre Creators’ Reserve 2011, Tarragon Theatre

Tarragon Theatre invites submissions from all interested creators to our Theatre Creators’ Reserve Program.  We are open to plays of all forms and in all stages of development, and a wide variety of play creation processes.  Tarragon sees this program as an opportunity to provide time for the creator(s) to take their plays to the next stage of development, and to build and strengthen relationships with both emerging and established artists in the theatre community.

Announcement: Anusree Roy Wins Prestigious Carol Bolt Awards for Playwrights, Playwrights Guild of Canada

At a reception organized by Playwrights Guild of Canada (PGC), the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT), and Playwrights Canada Press on October 30, 2011 at the Epicure Café & Grill in Toronto, Anusree Roy was presented with the 10th annual Carol Bolt Award for Playwrights for her critically acclaimed play Brothel #9.

Florence Gibson MacDonald, Jury Chair: “Anusree’s play stood out because it was such a compelling drama. The play reads like a novel by Zola or Dickens.” The other members of the jury were Jodi Armstrong, Don Hannah, and Estelle Shook.

Brothel #9 is Anusree Roy’s fourth play. Earlier this year it captured six Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations and went on to win the award for Outstanding New Play. Her other plays include Roshni, Letters to my Grandma, and Pyaasa, all produced at Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto.

Ms. Roy has also been a playwright-in-residence at the Canadian Stage Company (2008–2009), Theatre Passe Muraille (2009–2010), and the Blyth Festival (2010–2011). She won the RBC Emerging Artist Award in 2009 and the K.M. Hunter Artist Award for 2011. She holds an M.A from the University of Toronto and is the co-artistic director of Theatre Jones Roy.

The other finalists for the 2011 Carol Bolt Award for Playwrights were Catherine Banks (It Is Solved by Walking),Marie Clements (Tombs of the Vanishing Indian), Mieko Ouchi (Nisei Blue), and David Yee (paper SERIES).

The Carol Bolt Award for Playwrights, named after one of PGC’s founding members, is given annually to a member of PGC who has premiered an original play within the past year. A juried panel selects the winner from the eligible plays submitted. The winner of the Carol Bolt Award for Playwrights receives $3,000 and the opportunity to be published.

Past recipients of the award include Kent Stetson, Daniel Goldfarb, Florence Gibson MacDonald, Mieko Ouchi, John Mighton, Stephen Massicotte, Colleen Murphy, Vern Thiessen, and Michael Nathanson.

Funding for the award is generously sponsored by the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres, Playwrights Canada Press, and Playwrights Guild of Canada.

Playwrights Guild of Canada will host its 2012 awards reception at Stage West (Mississauga, Ontario) next fall. Along with the Carol Bolt Award for Playwrights, two new awards will be distributed by PGC, Best New Comedy ($5000) and Best New Musical ($5000). These new awards are sponsored by Stage West Restaurants.

Full-time position available for an ASSOCIATE PRODUCER (start date January 3, 2012)

The organization resides in our own permanent facility, the Young Centre for the Performing Arts, and we will
continue to grow our programming and education and outreach activities. Soulpepper is also the managing partner of the Young Centre and is responsible for all Young Centre programming activities.

THE POSITION
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Producer, the Associate Producer assists with management of the daily artistic operations of
Soulpepper and the Young Centre for the Performing Arts including management of artistic projects and festivals, communication, and audition coordination.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Acts as primary liaison between Soulpepeper and the Young Centre and its resident and contract artists
  • Manages projects and events for Soulpepper’s artistic activity including productions, workshops, touring initiatives, and Associate Artist activities
  • Manages projects and events for the Young Centre’s programming initiatives including festivals, presentations, incubation, outreach, and Resident Artist activities
  • Oversees non resident artist immigration processes
  • Collaborates with the Development Department for all fundraising events (including corporate and individual donor events)
  • Maintains positive and effective relationship with Canadian Actors Equity Association as primary liaison
  • Supervises audition processes, including liaising with the creative team, scheduling and monitoring
  • Ensures accurate and timely communication with individual productions/events by ongoing communication with the stage management teams/site coordinators/casual staff and supporting their needs
  • Participates in selection of and supervises programming interns and assistants, including developing work plans and proving ongoing supervision, direction, and feedback
  • Contributes to the overall success of Soulpepper and the Young Centre by accomplishing related results as needed

Qualifications:
The successful candidate will have:

  • Understanding of and familiarization with Canadian Actors’ Equity Association and the Canadian Theatre Agreement
  • Understanding of not-for-profits arts organizations and theatre practices
  • A high degree of professionalism and customer service skills
  • Strong leadership, decision-making, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent planning, organizational, time-management and team building skills
  • Strong interpersonal and oral/written communication skills
  • Self-starter, detail oriented, flexible
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Advanced computer skills in Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment with multiple deadlines
  • A passion for the performing arts

Education/Experience:

  • Post-secondary degree in arts administration or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience
  • 5 years related experience in a performing arts organization

 Call for proposals from Emerging and Established Artists & Art Facilitators

           Deadline: November 25, 2011

The festival which first highlighted the work of Black Women Artists in 2002 is back for #11.

The rock.paper.sistahz festival is a hand-picked and fully curated teaming of quality, diversity, and raw energy. We welcome submission/proposals for performances and other art ideas for and beyond the theatre stage; including: poetry & spokenword, dance, music, film/video screenings, visual art installations, storytelling, standup, etc.

Emerging and established Artists & Art Facilitators are invited to submit to this season’s festival which is themed: Old meets New meets Here&Now! With a special focus on presenting and hosting local, national, and international artists’ work in different languages other than English. The vision: to attract and engage communities/audiences of different cultures, especially by supporting immigrant/refugee artists. Events may include unique subtitling & interpretations!

Our festival venues include theatre spaces, rehearsal studios, the outdoor park and covered street at Artscape Wychwood Barns complex, and anywhere else you can think of!

The festival provides artists with these resources:

  • artists fees or participation honoraria
  • presentation venue
  • promotion, technical & creative support
  • travel expenses/per diem support for out-of-town participants

a)    A brief cover letter saying who you are, and how/why you want to participate in the festival

Today Mixed Company Theatre (MCT) is the launch of our AVIVA Community Fund Idea Proposal, DISS:  from the streets to the stage.  Help us bring theatre for social change to three communities (Hamilton, Brampton and Mississauga) in southern Ontario by giving us your VOTE!

Starting October 24 to November 9 the polls are open for the 2nd round of Voting.  MCT will be releasing photos and video clips from our DORA award nominated play, DISS, as well as asking you through email and social media to please give us your vote.  All you have to do is take a moment of your time to visit our profile and VOTE.

Alameda Theatre Company is currently accepting submissions for the OAC 2011 Theatre Creator’s Reserve. We feel this is an excellent incentive (and opportunity) to inspire artists to write first drafts, final drafts, ideas, and experiment in order to create a body of work that is professional, producible and relevant to Canadian theatre.

Youth will have the opportunity to learn skills in Acting, Writing, Set Design, Spoken Word, Puppetry and Improv. A collective creation project!

Alameda Theatre Company invites submissions from established and emerging playwrights for our Annual playwright’s festival and unit. Currently we are seeking submissions for the 2012 DE COLORES FESTIVAL OF NEW WORKS.

The De Colores Festival of New Works focuses on providing developmental support for works in progress written by Canadian Latin American artists. We pair the chosen playwrights with professional dramaturges from Toronto’s theatre community in order that they receive one-on-one support.
