LIVING CREATIVELY

On Sunday, March 25th, keep on MOVING presents LIVING CREATIVELY at St. Lawrence Hall, 157 King Street East, Toronto.  Designed for early to mid-career artists, this day of FREE workshops is open to everyone passionate about life in dance.

Participants may register for morning only or full-day sessions.

Morning Session: 10am – 1:30pm

LIVING CREATIVELY
Facilitated by Misha Glouberman of Collective Intelligence

This session will bring together early and mid‐career dance artists and broader dance community members, to talk about how to thrive in a life in dance. All who have a stake in the dance community are encouraged to attend, and to take this opportunity to connect, strategize, explore, and identify what we can do right now to address our most challenging and exciting opportunities.

Afternoon Sessions: 2:30 – 5pm

BARTERING & BUDGETING BASICS

Learn how to use innovative and realistic methods to flourish in less-than ideal financial situations.  Led by Bartering Guru Shannon Simmons, CFP and creator of theBarter Babes Project.  Presented in partnership with springforward project & career development.


FINANCES FOR THE ARTS

Expert advice on the nuts & bolts of managing and starting a company.  A practical approach to the technical aspects of cultural management, this workshop is for anyone concerned with the financial success of their current or future dance organizations. Led by Heather Young, founder of Young Associates and author of Finance for the Arts in Canada.


A CREATIVE LOOK AT PARALLEL CAREERS

A practical and creative exploration of what would fit your life style, your values and help support your dance career.  Led by Julie Warrington, Career and Educational Counsellor at Times Change, and Iona Frost, Project Director at springforward.

Event: 2012 Toronto Festival of Storytelling, Harbourfront Center

2012 Toronto Festival of Storytelling will be a celebration and exploration of all things ‘Canadian’ from Thursday, March 29 to Sunday, April 1, 2012, with the final day, April 1, being held at Harbourfront Center. Through stories that reveal our identity, we will explore our triumphs, contributions, uniqueness, struggles and growth as a nation. From our First Nations’ origins and European influences of the past, to the more recent arrival of immigrants from Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, Asia and the Americas- our country and its identity is constantly being reshaped.

You’ll fall in love with the multi-dimensional story of our great nation after sitting at the feet of our homegrown and world renowned tellers. Ivan Coyote will work her magic with enchanting tales of the Yukon. Newfoundland and Labrador’s Andy Jones of CODCO fame will leave you in stitches with his electric ‘Jack’ stories. Robert Seven Crows (Quebec) will share the secrets of nature and this land’s indigenous people with his guitar and drum. Special appearances by Korean storyteller Seung Ah Kim, Spoken Word artist Dwayne Morgan, UK teller Richard Martin, and US tale spinner Rafe Martin.

The Canada Council for the Arts Walter Carsen Prize for Excellence in the Performing Arts recognizes annually the highest level of artistic excellence and distinguished career achievement by a Canadian professional artist in dance, theatre or music. A prize of $30,000 will be awarded in 2012 in the field of dance.

Job Posting: Marketing Manager, Docket Theatre

Docket Theatre is looking for a Marketing Manager for its upcoming productions, The Farewell Party by Evan O’Donnell and Performing Occupy Toronto by Rosamund Small. These shows are being presented as a double-bill in late June, 2012. The first show is a period piece (wealthy New York Estate in 1924), and the second takes place at the 2011 Toronto Occupy site at St. James Park. This is a volunteer position, students are welcome to apply.

Who We Are:
Docket Theatre was founded in 2008 under the name Small Stage Theatre Company. We are an independent theatre company based in Toronto creating and developing original Canadian theatre. The company consists of just over 20 young artists, many enrolled in different theatre post-secondary programs across Ontario. Docket’s first two productions, “Genesis and Other Stories” and “Threesome”, were both performed at the Alumnae Theatre in downtown Toronto, and the third, “One Man Show”, performed at the Papermill Theatre, located at Todmorden Mills in the Don Valley of Toronto. Docket Theatre’s mandate is to produce original work, and to keep theatre alive for all generations. Docket Theatre is a continually expanding company which consists of talented, up and coming artists, passionate about creating relevant contemporary theatre.

Position:
The Marketing Manager oversees the image and promotions campaign for the production. S/he devises and maintains the public visuals for the show, and as such, has a great deal of influence over the way it is received, reviewed and attended. The Marketing Manager works closely with the production’s creative team and head of publicity. S/he s the key contact between the production and the media. The Marketing Manager must be as familiar with the script as possible, and must be able to articulate key points to an ‘outsider’ clearly and economically through visual means.

Two of the main tasks are to promote the show and create effective strategies to fill seats. Almost all of the work the Marketing Manager will complete will be prior to the show opening.

Responsibilities:

  • Research the play, its creative team and the themes being focused on in the production
  • Produce and disseminates the audience survey and follow-up reports
  • Create a comprehensive marketing plan detailing how and when marketing initiatives will be carried out
  • Co-ordinate effective promotional opportunities through distribution of posters, postcards and flyers through program stuffing, theatre lobbies, direct mail, etc.
  • Co-ordinate the work of volunteers in postering and promo distribution
  • Identify and approach potential promotional partners
  • Plan and organize promotional events

Event: Free Fall 2012, The Theatre Centre

FREE FALL ‘12 is an eight-day biennial national performance festival featuring new and boundary-testing works by emerging and established artists from across Canada.
March 24-31, 2012

Co-curated by The Theatre Centre’s Artistic Director Franco Boni and Michael Wheeler, Free Fall ’12 will explore shared vs individual experiences through the lens of theatre, installation, performance art, new media, walking tours, lectures, and online performance.
