Reporting to the Manager Museums and Heritage Services, the incumbent supervises all activities related to program development, marketing and leveraging of resources for the City of Toronto museums. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Implements detailed plans and recommends policies/procedures regarding program specific requirements
- Supervises, motivates and trains assigned staff, ensuring effective teamwork, high standards of work quality and organizational performance, continuous learning and encourages innovation in others. Also oversees recruitment selection, labour relations issues, performance appraisal, training and professional development
- Provides input into and administers assigned budget, ensuring that expenditures are controlled and maintained within approved budget limitations
- Responsible for researching and tracking trends related to museum industry, education sector curriculum needs, tourism trends and providing expert advice on strategic programme implementation
- Provides leadership in programme development for the City’s museums and special projects such as Bicentennial Commemoration.
- Ensures the achievement of attendance and revenue targets for the City’s museums
- Ensures high level of awareness of the museums with the media, residents, tourist and educational markets
- Ensures strategic integration of programming and marketing, to leverage resources and increase overall awareness of operational programs and revenue generating initiatives in the community.
- Develops new partnerships to leverage museums with public and private sectors
- Degree or certificate in media, marketing or communications or the approved equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Extensive experience with marketing/communications concepts and developing various marketing solutions suitable for not-for-profit environment.
- Considerable experience with and an ability to identify and understand the needs of various audience groups and to recommend cost efficient ways to reach these audiences.
- Considerable experience initiating and developing partnerships and sponsorships that leverage resources and audience support for heritage servicing.
- Significant supervisory experience leading and motivating staff in a unionized environment.
- Experience in the development, design and delivery of community engagement and consultation processes.
- Ability to develop consensus and recommend effective strategic solutions at the City and community level.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences in a variety of media and to simplify complex information both in written and verbal forms.
- Experience in project management combined with an ability to handle multiple projects within tight and often conflicting deadlines.
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to cultural and heritage issues.
- Familiarity with Ontario Statutes, including Occupational Health and Safety Act, employment standards, labour and human rights, and other applicable government legislation.
