FRESH IDEAS IN PUPPETRY – MAY 27th
a ONE DAY convivial gathering dedicated to exploring new developments in puppetry
An encounter for people interested in newly devised technical inventions and improvements, recent research discoveries, original creation processes, or novel ways of integrating puppetry into other artistic disciplines and media.
DAYTIME PROGRAMMING 10 AM to 6 PM
- Krista Dalby and Craig Morrison from Shadow of a Doubt Collective share their process for puppetry in educational settings;
- Saints and Sinners offer a glimpse of their latest work-in-progress
- 2 groups from Puppetmongers’ current Puppetry eXploratory Laboratory program present and discuss their evolving adaptations of classic texts: one a fusion of Shakespeare, film and puppetry called Dorm Room Hamlet, and Lazy Harry and Fat Trina: a Grimm retelling with a punk aesthetic
- Second year students from Humber will discuss the unique collaboration process between performance and technical students which culminates in puppetry performances along with 2 short excerpts
- Montrealers Madeleine Philbert and Catherine Sirois will present (in English) a recap of happenings at the recent symposium Colloque sur les arts de la marionette
- And the always popular round-up of puppetry video from the web, curated by Puppetmongers
Plus a lively Panel on Fresh Ideas in Founding & Funding: an exploration of possibilities in generating financial support and security for art and artists. Participants include Ronnie Burkett, Marcus Jamin of Dutch Uncle Puppetry, David Powell & Sheila Sky of Puppetmongers, and Cathy Gordon, former General Manager of the Theatre Centre and currently volunteer co-Artistic Director of Hub14. Facilitated by Heather Kent, Interim Director of the Humber School of Creative & Performing Arts
EVENING CABARET BEGINNING AT 8 PM
- Bekky O’Neil presents Girl in the Goldfish Bowl, a toy theatre adaptation of the Morris Panych piece
- Andrew Young of My Brother the Changeling presents Midnight Snack, a new work in development
- Artichoke Heart Collective presents newly developed extracts for a shadow work in progress
- CLUNK Puppet Lab presents newly developed segments on the work showcased at the Festival Castelier The Unremarkable Disappearance of Mr. Ogorki
- Mary Contrary Toy Theatre presents Alibech adapted from the Decameron (adult content)
- And winner of Ronnie Burkett’s last year’s impromptu $500 throw down challenge to come up with something new for marionettes reveals his progress to date.
