Call for Submissions: TPM Pitch Blitz, Theatre Passe Muraille

Theatre Passe Muraille would like to invite artists of all disciplines and backgrounds to come and make a pitch to Artistic Director Andy McKim. Releasing the bounds of a formal audition, the TPM Pitch Blitz is an opportunity for artists to introduce themselves to Theatre Passe Muraille in whatever way best represents them. The TPM Pitch Blitz gives artists five minutes to showcase themselves or present their project. Pitch an idea, pitch a show, pitch yourself! We’re on the lookout for exciting new artists to work with and remarkable artistic projects to facilitate. It’s a great way to introduce yourself to the TPM family and tell them what you’re all about.

Be sure to think outside the box—we are most interested in seeing artists who have something to say beyond “please produce my show”.

Our next TPM Pitch Blitz will be held on June 20th and 21st, from 10am-3pm. There are NO other available dates. Please submit only if you are available on those days.

All submissions are due on June 15th. We thank everyone for their submissions, but only the successful applicants will be notified.

Workshop: Audition Technique: A Masterclass with Kelly Thornton, Nightwood Theatre

DATES: Saturday, June 16th and Saturday, June 23rd, 10-4pm both days
COST: $150+HST
LOCATION: Nightwood/Tapestry Studio, 55 Mill St., The Cannery, Studio 315

“It’s important to approach an audition as a performance not a test. The joy one feels on stage needs to be brought into the audition room. To reframe a sense of powerlessness with a deeper understanding of your artistic worth is the essential ingredient to getting the job.”

-Kelly Thornton

Over two intensive sessions Artistic Director Kelly Thornton will lead participants in a practical exploration of audition technique and preparation. The course will help the actor solidify a contemporary speech of their choice for theatre auditions as well as equip the actor with tools to approach the “cold read”, where pertinent decisions must be made with limited time to prepare. The class will explore audition technique: presentation, attitude and focus as well as character development: moment-to-moment intention, conflict and overall arc.

Call for Submssions: Young Ruffian Apprenticeship Program, Shakespeare in the Ruff

Shakespeare in the Ruff is Toronto’s newest outdoor theatre company. Based in Withrow Park, we aim to create unique, colourful, and inventive productions of Shakespeare’s works much as they were first performed: open air, no sound equipment, sparse, with little more than a captivating story and living words. We know that the work we do today must create and inspire the artists and audiences of tomorrow. Using our summer performance as a pillar, we emphasize the involvement of the community’s youth through the Young Ruffian Apprenticeship Program, a unique educational and mentorship opportunity.

The Young Ruffians Apprenticeship Program strives to bring together 14 underserved secondary school youth from the Riverdale area and to provide them with the opportunity to develop their communication skills through the study of Shakespeare and the development and execution of their own collectively created production. From July 23rd-September 1st this summer, the Young Ruffians will train and work alongside theatre professionals toward the ultimate goal of creating their own show. The Young Ruffians will choose one stream of specialization: Performance, Directing, Stage Management, and Design. The first 4 weeks of the program are dedicated to developing theatrical skills through practical workshops and auditing the rehearsal process of Shakespeare in the Ruff’s The Two Gentlemen of Verona. The final 2 weeks are dedicated to collectively creation their own piece to be performed. This comprehensive program will allow students to learn key skills that are immediately put to use in a self produced, created, and performed show. At the heart of the Young Ruffian Apprenticeship Program is the need to inspire youth to pursue their untapped artistic capabilities, by allowing each participant the freedom to discover and share their own artistic voice.
