— March 6–24, 2013—
Alumnae Theatre Company invites playwrights to submit completed scripts or proposals for its annual three-week juried festival of new works, New Ideas Festive (NIF), which will be held from March 6–24, 2013. All scripts and proposals are read blind by two to three readers as part of the selection process. Completed scripts chosen for the festival will receive a full production with six performances. Scripts in early development or those longer than 40 minutes may be selected for a workshopped reading.
NIF offers playwrights an opportunity to collaborate with other theatre artists. As NIF focusses on script development, playwrights may not act in or direct their own scripts. Instead, they are encouraged to participate in the whole production process, from choosing a director and cast to attending rehearsals and revising their work as it comes off the page. NIF offers
dramaturgical support to playwrights who request it, free rehearsal and production space, technical support, access to Alumnae Theatre’s costume and props collections, publicity, and sold-out houses.
Scripts submitted must be original works that have not been previously performed outside of a workshop. They may be in any genre or style, with a running time of 10 to 40 minutes; one act of a full-length play will also be considered. Submissions longer than 40 minutes will only be considered for a reading. Playwrights submitting a proposal must provide a detailed plan of the
project, including a completion schedule and at least three scenes. Preference will be given to scripts with challenging roles for women of all ages.
Submissions are being accepted now until September 15, 2012 (September 30 for Alumnae members). Playwrights may submit a maximum of two projects. A fee of $10 will be charged per submission (fee waived for Alumnae members).
Scripts or proposals must be typed single-sided on 8.5″ x 11″ white paper with pages numbered. Please include the following on the cover page:
- title of the play
- list and description of characters with their ages
- synopsis of play (35 words or less)
Send a separate contact page with the submission that includes:
- title of play
- playwright’s name and contact information
- short bio of playwright (75 words or less)
Please do not place the playwright’s name on any of the text pages, as scripts are read blind.
Scripts or proposals for NIF 2013 may be submitted electronically in Word or PDF format to NIFscripts@gmail.com (preferred).
If submitting a hard copy version of a script or proposal, please mail or deliver three copies to:
