Announcement: New Managing Director, Factory Theatre

The Board of Directors of Factory Theatre is pleased to announce that Sara Meurling will be joining the organization as the new Managing Director.   Sara will take up her position on a full-time basis as of September 8, 2009.

“Sara is an ideal choice for Factory,” says Ron Struys, President of the Factory Board of Directors.  “Her extensive producing and managerial experience in Toronto theatre together with her retail marketing/management background made her an easy choice for the Board.  Equally important is Sara’s passion for theatre and for Factory’s commitment to showcasing new Canadian works and our nation’s diversity, regions, experiences and ideas. We believe Sara Meurling and Artistic Director Ken Gass will make a great team to push Factory to its next plateau of achievement, as we celebrate our 40th anniversary of producing high quality original Canadian theatre.”

Sara Meurling is a professional arts manager with more than 25 years of experience, most recently as the General Manager of the Young Centre of the Performing Arts.  Sara was General Manager and Producer for the Theatre Centre during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s.   She has worked with performing arts organizations including small theatre companies and larger organizations from the Dance Umbrella of Ontario through the Ontario Puppetry Association. A strong and committed community member, she is current President of the Small Theatre Administrative Facility (STAF) and Theatre Gargantua, and has served on the Board of the Toronto Theatre Alliance (now TAPA) and as a Dora juror.  Sara has also held management positions in the private sector, notably with one of Canada’s leading Apple computer dealerships, Carbon Computing.

Meurling says with enthusiasm, “I am truly thrilled to be working with the team at Factory Theatre, particularly with Ken, who has exhibited artistic leadership and has such a remarkable history in the development of contemporary Canadian theatre.”

Artistic Director Ken Gass adds, “Building on the success of the past four decades, the Factory is poised to make another great leap as we prepare for our 40th season and beyond, with renewed plans for both artistic and facility revitalization.  Sara Meurling will be a vital part of the team that makes this happen, and I’m extremely pleased she has stepped forward to meet this challenge.”

Meurling joins Factory Theatre at the launch of its 40th season of operations – opening with the North American premiere of True Love Lies written and directed by Brad Fraser.  True Love Lies is a searing comedy exposing a modern family and their long held secrets.  A huge hit at its premiere in the U.K., the play is described as ‘dark, dangerous, and very funny.’  Starring Andrew Craig, Susanna Fournier, David W. Keeley, Julie Stewart and Ashley Wright, True Love Lies begins previews September 26 and runs from October 1 to November 1, 2009.   For ticket information contact 416 504-9971 or visit www.factorytheatre.ca
