Event: SHAKESBEERS SHOWDOWN 2014, Spur-Of-The-Moment-Shakespeare Collective

Toronto’s top Shakespearean companies come together to battle over
sonnets and spirits at the annual Shakesbeers Showdown

The battle over the bard goes down April 25 at the annual Shakesbeers Showdown, hosted by the Spur-Of-The-Moment-Shakespeare Collective (SOTMSC). Shakespearean theatre companies from across Toronto will converge to meet and compete in improvised performances to prove who’s best with the bard — all fuelled by a steady flow of beer.

The challenge: Reading one of the oldest copies of the works as accurately as possible while under a barrage of jeers, cheers and beers before a panel of judges. Whoever reads their lines the best — while keeping as much beer in their cup as they can — will be declared the victor.

The evening’s drunken dramas and sloshed soliloquies are being undertaken for a charitable cause: Proceeds from the event will go to fund creative programming at women’s shelters and drop-ins in Toronto, starting with the Adelaide Resource Centre for Women. The programming will work with the facility’s clients to engage in a physical retelling of the SOTMSC’s season opener, Julius Caesar.

This evening will feature numerous Toronto indie theatre stars, including:

  • Shakespeare-In-The-Ruff
  • Urban Bard Productions
  • Shakespeare Bash’d
  • Humber River Shakespeare Company
  • Shakey-Shake and Friends, and
  • SOTMSC.

Come cheer on your favourite team, support women’s shelter programming, and raise a toast to Toronto’s independent theatre scene.
