Call for Submissions: Mentor/Apprentice Program, Obsidian Theatre

Obsidian Theatre Company is now seeking applicants from across Canada for its Mentor/Apprentice Program. As one of the leading independent theatre companies in Canada, Obsidian is passionately dedicated to the exploration, development and production of the Black voice.

Obsidian Theatre’s Mentor/Apprentice Program provides young-in-craft theatre artists much needed work experience and a deeper understanding of professional practises by working with some of the most sought after theatre practitioners in Canada, including members of Obsidian Theatre Company.

Funding by the Department of Canadian Heritage allows us to offer paid apprenticeship positions.

This one of a kind program was created to develop the skills of black Canadian theatre artists and to help motivated creators take their careers to the next level.

Apprenticeships are available in the following fields of interest:

  • Directing
  • Dramaturgy
  • Lighting Design
  • Production Management
  • Costume Design
  • Set Design
  • Producing
  • Music
  • Directing

Placements will occur between the fall of 2014 and spring 2015

Applicant Qualifications

  • Must be actively pursuing a professional career in the theatre.
  • Have an education in theatre, or equivalent experience at the community or professional level.
  • Must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant
  • Must identify as a member of the Black community.

Please submit a resume and cover letter indicating career goals and how an apprentice position would help in achieving those goals. Applicants from across Canada are encouraged to apply.
