Internships: Paid Summer Internships, Theatre Gargantua

Theatre Gargantua is hiring two summer interns for the roles of Publicity and Community Relations Coordinator and Producing Assistant.

Theatre Gargantua is a Toronto-based company with over 20 years history of making award winning inspired productions that combine dynamic physicality, evocative live music, innovative designs and provocative text to tell our stories. Our productions have been presented on some of Toronto’s most prestigious stages include the Royal Alexandra Theatre, toured the UK and headlined the Portland Performing Arts Festival. We are currently developing a new production for the fall, and will present our second SideStream Cycle at the Summerworks Festival in August.

Internship 1 – Producing Assistant

Role and Responsibilities
Theatre Gargantua is seeking a committed and talented individual for a paid summer internship position. Working in tandem with the Artistic Director and Producer, the intern will receive on-the-job mentoring and experience in producing independent theatre and managing an independent theatre company. The Producing Assistant will assist with producing and community relations work for the upcoming season; specifically:

  • Assisting the Producer and Artistic Director across all areas of producing
  • Assist with At-Risk Youth & Education programs and workshops that are held during the summer; research potential partners and participants
  • Make connections with the community neighbourhood
  • Research potential new funding partners – foundations & corporate, artists liaison, contracts, etc
  • Rehearsal room support
  • Maintaining company database
  • Ensuring contract riders are provided for artists
  • Assisting with Production Budgeting / Reporting; Marketing and Press relations
  • Liaison with Board of Directors
  • Assist with Special Event planning
  • Assist with managing volunteers
  • Assist with operation of the production office
  • Other administration as required.

Person Description
This position is ideal for a candidate in a Theatre, Arts Administration, Business Management, or Liberal Arts program and is an excellent opportunity to learn and gain experience in the development and producing of new theatre, and well as office operations, connecting with the community and building an even better connection with local businesses and residence. The ideal candidate will have

  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Critical thinking, organization and strategic planning skills
  • Works well independently and in a small office setting.
  • Interest and knowledge of the performing arts

Internship 2 – Publicity and Outreach Coordinator

Role and Responsibilities
Theatre Gargantua is seeking a committed and talented individual for a paid summer internship position. Working in tandem with the Artistic Director and Producer, the intern will receive on-the-job mentoring and experience in producing independent theatre and managing an independent theatre company. The Publicity and Community Relations Coordinator will assist with the production and design/maintenance of our website and digital media-based productions for the upcoming season; specifically:

  • Provide user support, responding to inquiries, creating/administering groups, etc.
  • Plan and conduct outreach to build online user community though social media efforts, partner organizations, school audiences, etc.
  • Track, analyze, and provide regular reports on site usage and online presence (links, media coverage, social media, etc.).
  • Develop new content (copy, images, video), including research, writing, copyediting, fact-checking, and proofreading.
  • Make connections with the community neighbourhood
  • Communicate with volunteers and other staff to develop additional content.
  • Work with users and web design/development team to define additional features and/or modifications to website in conjunction with new production.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Person Description
The position is ideal for a candidate in Arts Administration, Business Management and Marketing, Web/Graphic Design, or Communications and is an excellent opportunity to learn and gain experience in developing community relations and creating public awareness and engagement in the arts. The ideal candidates will have:

  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Critical thinking, organization and strategic planning skills
  • Works well independently and in a small office setting.
  • Experience/Education in design relating to web or interactive media.
  • Experience and fluency with digital and social media including facebook, twitter, instagram and updating/maintaining a website and/or blog page.
  • Public Relations Education and/or Experience is an asset.
  • Experience with digital editing is an asset.
  • Strong design sensibilities and interest in the performing arts

For Either Position:
The successful candidate must have been enrolled in a post-secondary institution in the past year and have the intention of returning as a student in the fall, and be between 18 and 30 years of age.

This is a full-time contract which will take place between June and August, pay: $11/hr
