Tarragon Theatre is one of Canada’s most important cultural institutions. Heading into our 44th season, we are a leader in developing and producing new Canadian plays by this country’s most important writers. We are approaching 600 scripts developed at the theatre and 150 premiered, by established and emerging writers alike. Playwrights are at the centre of what we do – we work to discover fresh new voices while trying to provide the best conditions for Canadian work to thrive, and support our playwrights with a panoply of resources throughout their process. At Tarragon, we work hard to reach further while responsibly managing our resources, and are deeply proud of our stability in these challenging times.
We are looking for someone to lead the conversation about reaching new audiences. Reporting to the General Manager and Artistic Director, you will help re-imagine our audience acquisition and retention strategies to grow our current audience and start building for the future. Working closely with our administrative, patron service and artistic teams, you will implement innovative and successful sales strategies, growing our strong base of loyal subscribers while casting your imagination to meeting new communities and engaging them in the work we do.
Tarragon is a busy, fast-paced theatre where teamwork and individual focus are equally valued. You must be able to juggle several balls, and run with them too, and take great satisfaction in helping to support the vision of a theatre trying to think differently.
The ideal candidate will embrace innovation; have a thorough understanding of the local and national arts ecology; be a strategic thinker who is up to speed with the shifting trends in their field; be excited by the prospect of working in a fast-paced and very liberal artistic environment; and be familiar with the challenges and opportunities of working in a mid-size arts organization.
- create a comprehensive communications and marketing plan, in consultation with the General Manager, that includes objectives, strategies, time-lines and budgets
- shape the public’s experience and perception of the Theatre to achieve marketing goals, growing the Tarragon Village program
- plan and implement all printed material, including but not limited to brochures, flyers, advertising materials, newsletters, posters and other promotional materials, as well as implement a “style guide” for departmental communications
- plan and implement all electronic material, including but not limited to website content management, e-blasts, newsletters, web ads and other materials
develop a new/social media strategy for the Theatre
- plan and implement ticket selling strategies for all casual and subscription sales
- manage relations with our large community of subscribers, while engaging new patrons through programs and initiatives
- in consultation with the Publicist, plan the media strategy
- manage any departmental special events
- a passion for building support for new work and Canadian artists
- post-secondary degree/diploma and/or a minimum of four years’ experience related to theatre and communications.
- management skills with some history of working with a staff that reports to them
- knowledge of the not-for-profit arts environment
- excellent at multi-tasking and time and project management; very organized and detail orientated
- strong communication skills
- strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with the ability to pick up new programs quickly
- impeccable work-ethic
- a sense of humour, or at least the ability to laugh at someone else’s jokes
