Group Practice is a space for practicing, sharing and valuing individual movement practices.  The thinking behind these sessions is rooted in post-modern dance and practitioners from all fields are welcome.

Sessions begin with silent self-directed practice from 9:00 to 10:45, followed by a 15-minute break/transition.  A facilitated dialogue takes place in the final hour, beginning with a simple invitation for participants to share any aspect of their practice.  Depending on participants’ interests, this could evolve into in-depth discussion or a facilitated embodied exploration of emergent themes.

Please trust that your current practice is “enough” to participate in these sessions.  The emphasis here is not on having impressive work to share but rather the reverse – through sharing, to discover and remember the richness of engaging in practice.  In the year since this practice began, all who have attended – dancers, yoga practitioners, musicians, film-makers, gardeners, performance artists, writers, people who lie on their living room floor and many more – have found shared inspiration and been valued contributors to our process.

Dawne Carleton’s work as a dance artist, instructor and creative process facilitator is rooted in an improvisation practice that spans over 20 years.  She received a Canada Council grant for Masters-level studies at the European Dance Development Center in The Netherlands.  She is a choreographer who “enhance[s] our understanding of who and what we are as embodied creatures” (The Dance Current).  She brings a deep sense of listening to one-on-one creative process facilitation work with artists from diverse fields.  In addition to Group Practice Carleton teaches Solo Dancing, an advanced 10-week improvisation course.
