Audition: The City and The City, Upintheair Theatre and The Only Animal

Upintheair Theatre and The Only Animal are holding auditions for The City and The City, a new Canadian adaptation of the novel by China Miéville, adapted by Jessie Award winning playwright Jason Patrick Rothery, and directed by Kendra Fanconi (The Only Animal). The piece will be interactive, with a significant amount of audience participation.


Initial casting is for a paid, two week workshop November 11 – 20, 2014 [10 am – 6pm: workshop] and November 21, 2014 [2 – 10pm: public presentation] with consideration for roles in the full production scheduled for fall 2015.

Please submit a headshot and resume (detailing physical skills and abilities including training in Suzuki and viewpoints) in ELECTRONIC FORMAT ONLY to submisssions@upintheairtheatre.com by Monday Sept 22, 2014.  Auditions will be held Friday Sept 26th, 2014. Please include confirmation for your availability for the November 2014 dates with your submission: including full details of any conflicts with the above schedule including pre-existing contracts or regular work.

Only those actors selected for an audition will be contacted. Sides will be provided.

Casting Notes:
We are casting the following roles:

  • Corwi: Paid, non-union. Female: 25 -35 years. She is a junior constable, smart as a whip, and loyal.
  • Bowden: Paid, non-union. Male: 45 – 60 years. An academic who has a big ego but is a failure. Sympathetic, seems like a victim but dangerous.  A university professor, who wrote a very controversial book when he was young and is now held back in his career – the role requires a high level of skill in movement and physical theatre.
