Job Posting: Theatre Production Controller, Starvox Entertainment

One of Canada’s leading commercial theatre companies, Starvox Entertainment, is seeking to appoint a highly skilled and committed Production Controller to work at its head office as part of an expanding team. The role requires an analytical theatre professional to take responsibility for all aspects of production finance, with a strong emphasis on budgets, processes and cost control. In addition, an understanding of contracts and union agreements is desirable. Experience working in multiple currencies is also an asset. Therefore, someone with strong business acumen who is aware of the bottom line and experienced in dealing with multiple productions is essential.

Key Responsibilities
  • Building of Excel models for all theatrical productions
  • Creating and maintaining budgets
  • Evaluating the performance of income and cost projections
  • Ensuring that key stakeholders are consulted and fully involved in any budget setting decisions
  • Producing weekly, monthly and quarterly management reports to relevant management
  • Working closely with and managing bookkeeper to ensure all show expenses are accounted for Analyzing variances and exploring potential problems
  • Ensure returns to any investors are correctly treated
  • Ensure royalty payments are calculated, paid, and accounted for
  • Ensure financial approval limits and policies are adhered to
Skills Needed
  • Understanding of theatrical productions and their operations
  • A thorough understanding of planning, budgeting and forecasting
  • Confident in the manipulation of data
  • Bookkeeping experience in similar industry with knowledge of Quickbooks software
  • A knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles
  • Strong communication skills and confidence in discussing and modelling financial scenarios with non accountants
  • The ability to work well under pressure and a proven ability to manage and meet conflicting deadlines
  • The ability to critically appraise financial systems, processes and controls, and identify and implement changes to the processes and procedures to strengthen the control environment and increase efficiency of the team
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
