Thinking of producing a show or starting a theatre company?
If you want to do a show but have never produced professionally before, and if you want to know what questions to ask first, this session is for you! Self-Start is a practical seminar facilitated by Erin Keating, Program Coordinator and Peter Pasyk, 2015 Neil Munro Shaw Director’s Project Intern.
This workshop is designed for individuals thinking of producing a show or starting a theatre company, and gives you the opportunity to:
- Ask questions and try out ideas,
- Discover the questions you need to ask and answer,
- Learn to organize your thinking and planning,
- Work on scheduling and budget considerations,
- And find out about available resources and service
Erin Keating, currently Program Coordinator at Theatre Ontario, has previously worked as Operations Manager of Theatre New Brunswick, the province’s only English-speaking professional theatre company, and as Music & Marketing Coordinator of Fredericton’s Harvest Jazz & Blues Festival, the biggest music festival on Canada’s east coast. She has also served as Secretary for PACT’s Regional Theatre Caucus. As a playwright, Erin’s plays have been produced by the NotaBle Acts Theatre Festival, Saint John Theatre Company, Theatre on the Edge Festival, and TNB New Voices. She also co-adapted Miracle on 34th Street for Theatre New Brunswick’s Main Stage last Christmas, which will be remounted at Sudbury Theatre Centre, and the Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia this Christmas. She has acted as dramaturge on several scripts, most recently David Adams Richards’ Beaverbrook. Erin holds a degree in Journalism and Communications from St. Thomas University in Fredericton, NB, and as a playwright has worked with Mieko Ouchi, Jeffrey Hatcher, and Walter Learning, and the Playwrights Atlantic Resource Centre.
Peter Pasyk is a Toronto-based director of theatre and film, and the Artistic Director of surface/underground theatre for which he directed the Dora-nominated productions of Dying City, When the World Was Green, and The Jones Boy. Peter directed the world premieres of Rosa Laborde’s Like Wolves at the GCTC in Ottawa, and Jordan Tannahill’s Late Company at SummerWorks 2013, which received the Best Production and NOW Audience Choice awards. Peter directing work has been nominated for the Pauline McGibbon Award, the John Hirsch Prize (Canada Council for the Arts), the John Hirsch Award (Ontario Arts Council), and the Dora Award for Outstanding Direction in Independent Theatre. Last season Peter was the Urjo Kareda Artist-in-Residence at Tarragon Theatre where he Assistant Directed Lungs, and the world premiere of Sean Dixon’s Governor General Award-nominated play A God in Need of Help. After his internship at the Shaw Festival, Peter will be returning to Toronto to direct the much-anticipated remount of Late Company.
