ANTON [25-30]. Seamster at the Kamerny Theatre. Socially awkward. Sometimes stonefaced. Was the runt when he served in the army seven years ago. Handy with stitches, nuts and bolts. Trying to navigate a budding and miscommunication-ridden romance with one of his co-workers, a seamstress who is just as awkward as he.
Seams is a memory play set in Moscow in 1939, following the lives of five seamstresses and one seamster in the Kamerny Theatre in the first months of the Second World War. It is framed by the memories of an old woman, Frosya, who now lives in Canada and spends her days reminiscing about the past and catching up on Russian soap operas.
The play is highly aesthetic – we want to create a world the audience enters into, like stepping into someone else’s memory. It will be sensorially immersive, and a little absurd, the way memory tends to be. And so, the design will grow alongside the actors’ discoveries. As we rehearse, we’ll play with falling “snow”, projections, lighting and soundscapes, scents, fabrics, and the physical relationship between audience and performers, among others. The first half of the rehearsal process will be structured as an exploration of said design elements, as well as building character and relationships. We want our actors to have creative say in the building of this world.
We are currently accepting submissions for male actors with experience and/or comfort with devising and collective work. We encourage submissions from actors of all ethnicities and body types. Note that the age indicated is the age of the character, not necessarily the actor.
Please submit a headshot and resume to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Due to time constraints, only successful applicants will be contacted. We thank you for your interest.
